I know that this subject has come up many times beforeand people have differing views on the subject.but i would just like to add my own ten penneth from my experience at gold trowel. I went into the course with limited experience i.e. had done a 2 week skimming course and a few jobs here & there. i have done 6 weeks there & just passed my city & guilds, its not just the qualification but the way the training is delivered, you are constantly taken out of your comfort zone & tested to the limit, the walls are that german word that they really can be a struggle which in my eyes is replicating the real world. so i can now skim large areas using a rolling gauge, float & set, render, floor sreed, fit coving & have a sound knowledge of products & the theory of plastering. i am obviously not the best or most experienced plasterer in the world but i am ready & have the confidence to go out & make a go for it. I would thouroughly reccomend this training route to anyone. This is not an advert for gold trowel just my take on acourse that i have attended. Ok shoot me down!!
p.s. you will not find an instructor as passionate about his job than Andy Marshall

replicating the real word on some walls......just because some walls are of german word ie bad divots etc you have only just scratched the surface of plastering...every job is different....lathe plaster, water damaged boards...tricky small fiddly hits....different suctions....strange backgrounds.rendering ..scratch rendering..preparation of background..new materials..new techniques and so on..etc etc etc this is the real world , and although those guys have put u on the right road there are sooooo many things to learn where NO course will teach you everything becuase its not possible to do everything in a very short period of time!!
.....my advice is try and hook up with an old school plasterer to further your skills, this will be invaluable experience..and if u are really serious in doing this as a full time career this is the only way forward... im sure most will agree with me on this one that most good plasterers learn things continously, ie. work in progress..but u are only as good as your teacher to begin with...there are so many ways to skin the same cat, I personally try and further myself all the time in this game...forums help..but it is a hands on job......what u think at this time is your comfort zone in a few years will be kids play..what u think is a big hit now in 5 years will make u laugh..its a hard game plastering and as much infomation and learning from others is always a good thing......just dont think u can go out in the market we are in at the moment and think u can earn £200 a day cause that would be very foolish....your goals at the moment is perfect work....not rough bit here or there etc....perfect work.....dont try and get your speed up too quickly that will come in time...dont slag off competion your work should speak for itself.....get yourself about..talk to builders, developers, window / conservative copmanys, kitchen companys etc as your speed wont be good enough to get onto a real site as yet, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing..and at this moment in time u know very little in the great scheme of things in this trade.
Please dont take what i say as having a dig, its not its just realistic.....u need lots and lots of practice try on family friends etc and most of all youll need experience and the only way your gonna do that is get out there and prove yourself to others as well as yourself.....youll drop weight, get muscles, get fit and most of all have a passion for this trade.
Hope this is of some help...others here will say u cant learn learn plastering in this short time...u can..i have ..i i earn a very good living out of it. The success rate ( ie people who are now plastering competitively fulltime after say 5 years)from all the colleges teaching plastering ( not just the one u mentioned) is very low compared with the amount of students coming thru the doors....why..cause its bloody hard work and some arnt cut out for it..
.good luck in starting out fella..and i mean it.....
