Plastering hallway

Hi all,

I want to plaster my hallway because the wall is a bit uneven.

The existing plaster seems solid so I'm not sure whether to take it off completely or whether to try and shave off the bits that are bulging out, then score it and work over the top of it.

Also, is it better to start by putting on a layer of bonding plaster (using dots and a darby to get it flat) followed by a skimming layer?

Or is it better to put plasterboard over the top of the existing plaster?

Thanks.

Depends how bad it is, if you board over the top you have to take all the skirts off or hack off completely to meet the stringer.

Sounds to me like a reskim with a smear of bonding here and there, where needed.

Don't try to shave anything, if its that proud attack with a hammer and boltser, then fill with bonding.

Get some pics up. Of the misses!

Thanks,

There's a slight horizontal bulge running along the wall in the middle, but maybe like you say I should start by chipping away at it with a hammer and bolster. I've got no web space to put a photo at the moment.

Yes I did a plastering course a few years ago but haven't done any since then, so I'm not confident in my ability or about making the best decisions as to how to progress with a job like this.

But if it all goes wrong its not the end of the world, I can just rip it all off and start again:)

Cheers.

I've started chipping away at the part of the wall which bulges out slightly and found that the reason it bulges is because there's some piping running along it. I think if I continue to chip away at it and take it back to the level of the pipes then I can get the wall nice and flat.

Is it acceptable though to just add a finishing layer on top of this? Is it ok for these pipes to be only just beneath the surface of the finishing plaster? I guess this is the case at the moment even if its not ideal.

It looks like an old electrical cable with rubber insulation(its an old house)

I think maybe I won't worry about trying to reduce the bulge and just put a finishing layer of plaster on top, at least that will make the wall look nice and smooth even if its not completely flat.

Call me psychic but your gonna make a right mess of this

Probably! but I live here so even if I do, I can just start again.

Cheers.

Hi,

I don't really want to mess with the cable so I'm planning on using bonding plaster to build up the areas surrounding the bulged out area of the wall, to try and make the wall flatter, ready for the finish plaster layer.

Do I need to apply a PVA/water mix to the wall before the bonding plaster though?

Thanks.

It's not the mains electric going to the mains board is it? Leave well alone!

Blend either side with bonding and over skin the whole wall, if it still looks **** get someone of here to do it
