morning guys
i wonder if anyone can help me ? i am gutting my brothers bathroom & have used a mixture of mr board & standard board but i need to plaster a few inches on to the mr board where the 2 meet. is this possible ? can i just pva the board or does it need thistle bond it (as per british gypsum website). any help would be appreciated.
???

Hi mate , some say its ok to skim on m-r board and i have done with no problems but years ago i had a whole site of ten houses where the bathrooms were done in m-r and it all came off in sheets and had to be done again via the bonding agent route so perhaps its done to the board manufacturer but the wickes bonding agent is your cheapest option if you go done that road sorry to be so vague .

always use thistle bond or betonkontakt on mr board pva doesnt work because its water based

y would u need to skim M-R BOARD? u tile it after tanking it dont you..and any painted bit cant u make up in normal board and just skim the p-board and the tils can just over lap a bit of skim?

I take it you mean the blue board and not the aqua panel boards, I thought if you skim over mr boards then they no longer act as a moisture resistant board, I may be wrong though,

m-r are usually green and soundblock boards are usually blue, ive skimmed over m-r boards with or without pva, to be honest i think its a load of b*ll***s m-r boards.

got to say pug and flinny surely the answer is in the name moisture resistent and also the earlier post which said it fell off in sheets?????????????? moisture resistent dont skim unless bondit is on it end of

could of fell off coz the boards were dusty? Put it this way ive skimmed a lot of M-R board with pva and without and its not fell off once end of ;)

it was some years back around ten i think, they were La farge boards and there was no info on them at the time so thet were just skimmed the houses were all board mr in the bathrooms & en suites after a couple of weeks they all came off ceilings and walls only the scrim held it on in places, 8 out of the 10 houses were skimmed out, la farge was conntacted and stated that betacontak had to be used on there mr board. Since then i have allways ask the question when skimming green board but never had to bond it since so maybe its just some makes of board

sorry about the (end of bit flinny) sounded a bit shitty wasnt ment that way what im saying is follow the manufacturers speck or best of all if its got to be skimmed dont use green boards,

no offence taken mate! i just think that once ordinary board is decorated correctly if its a bathroom or kitchen, it'll be moisture resistant!

no offence taken mate, ive got to agree with pug once its skimmed its gotta be more water resistant than M-R on their own. Also like you say go with the spec but have a look closer, M-R boards, Bond-it then skim, its got to add an extra £70 - £80 on materials and you know whos getting that? Ive boarded hundreds of bathrooms and skimmed them with normal P-B and never had a single problem and have you ever tried to take tiles off a studded wall thats been skimmed not an easy task.

made a cock up and put the mr board past where the tiles finish so i need to skim slightly on to mr board . ihave bought and applied some wickes bonding agent, will skim tomorrow

some jobs are like a patchwork quilt........mr board, firecheck, soundblock , stnd board.......double layers and everyone seems to be different ???......i skim loads of bathrooms with standard 12.5mm board where others are mr board .........i think people just make it up as they go!
