plastering onto a brick fireplace

Hello there
Ive got a fireplace i need to cover. What would you recommend the best way to cover it? the front already has a fireplace surround onto it and i want to keep it. should i use bonding or hardwall and then skim it or is there a better way. i would just dot and dab it but i will lose to much of the surround.
Any answers will be really appreciated.

if its an old house ,i use sand & cement with some water proofer in it first then set
