theres always discussion on apprenticeships, no education but learning hands on with time served guys for years etc etc.

how did you learn?

me personally ive done 2 years at college and im going to do another 2 years, hopefully working for the council also all being well. work for myself aswell on the side along with my current job to gain experience and ive beed looking for someone to take me on as a trainee for god knows how long but thats never worked out as they make false promises and simply dont want to know, so on my own back it has to be. tho i never go out and undercut their prices.

i started out doing reveals and patch up brick outs as a window fitter bout 15 years ago..
got out of that game and worked for a general builder, worked alongside the plasterers for a few years everything from boarding, prepping, cleaning to getting on a trowel and rendering up after dp course etc...
was there for about 5 years then went on my own as a general builder...
these days i just stick to plastering.. partnerships and having to organise teams of lads to do complex jobs and follow instructions did my bloody head in.. easy enough when youve got all the time and money in the world..
bloody hard work when your competing against people who will do whatever it takes to f''k you over...
sometimes i think im just too much of a decent bloke to be in this game..
someone once told me "youll never make money being genuine chris".. these days i believe em..
you worry too much spoony..
if you can do a job just as well as a 'time served' tradesman then go for it..
if you go out, price work up, then have to come on a forum to ask people how to do the job... then you should be shot..
bottom line is... if you cant do it, dont price it... if you CAN do it... whats stopping you?
youre one of the good uns mate..

spot on seggsy theres people you think you can trust but you cant and vice versa ......where moneys involved theres no friends

dont bother we are in a recession,do something else as the SPREADS that are in the know are struggling so youve got no chance

bill
spoony's been on here ages... as have i, ignore my new newbie status its a re-signup..
neither is he a 5 day courser...
he's also done many a job...
you wont find him pricing work and then asking how to do it.. more like i did this, found it hard work but got it in the end, what did i do wrong... sort of thing i might be askin some of the senior members myself..
the lads ok..
its the people that do a five day course, learn nothing then go out and price work.. get the job (which means someone who can, HASNT got the job) and THEN come on here asking how to DO the job that get shot at..
sorry.. rant over...

I left school at 16 and was out working 2 days later, I work with ma dad and uncle they worked for my grandad and he worked for his dad so it's been in the family for generations. They'v got 50 years+ experience between them im 20 now and still enjoying it.

as above, started this game with my next door neighbour, going weekends when i was 15, when i left school, the guy he worked for gave me a job, 60 pound a week, i was loaded :D, ...... good money for a school leaver, bin in the game ever since,. the blokes that taught me were old school, wasnt allowed to touch a trowel for about 3 months, when i was ,it was only to clean it, think thats starting from the begining.........good with a broom aswell in them days :D

chris w. read some of your post before joining.must say some interesing /good comments, just realised you are mr seggs.you are absolutley correct.i have just replied to a post on college kids.re same thing.how can somebody who needs advice to do a job in there trade be competent in the first place, you wouldnt expect a stonemason to ask how to do his job.my partner does stained glass work in cathedrals.wouldnt expect him to ring everest for advice at £800 pounds a day.

it was the reason we set up the faq jeda.. idea being that experienced plasterers contributed to it so we built up a wealth of knowledge knowing that theres more than one way to skin a cat.. ('dp beds' favourite catchphrase)
problem seems to be that the governments idea of a fast track route to getting off the dole got interpreted as a 'fast track route to big money via the internet'...
genuine ideas and suggestions always welcome...
not least in dealing with 'trolls' - im thinking of a voting system...
nothing wrong with getting advise to do up your own home...
different thing altogether pricing work up that youve no idea how to go about doing.. its just wrong imo..

thanks for that chris, tis true i dont go out there claiming im a "spread" but i charge a fair price and im bloody good at what i do. always take pride in my work and leave a quality job.

as for bills comments "dont bother we are in a recession,do something else as the SPREADS that are in the know are struggling so youve got no chance"

we certainly are in a recession, but im quite happily building up my contacts and i have about 8 weeks of work through these so surely i must be doing something right. even when i wasn't working i was out down the local pubs 1-2:30pm for a crafty pint on the offchance other tradesmen would be in there for a cheeky pint after they'd finished work themselves, exchanged business cards and have a steady work flow coming in thanks to this so all is well
