Plastering window surround

Hi everyone!

This is my first post on this forum. I have done a little bit of skimming with good success but I am still very much an amateur, and I am hoping someone can help me with this question!

I need to skim the surround for my window, but I do not need to skim the adjoining wall. Is there any problem using stop bead (rather than corner bead) to just do the surround?

Take it you mean the reveals? Where the wall returns back to the window frame? You can use a stop bead but you'll have to fill the end and rub down where it buts upto the face of the wall. It's a bit fiddly to get right, can't you use angle beads and feather in round the window

I personally would not use a stop bead to do it... A corner bead would work then just feather the bead on the face wall and lose it that way or dont use a bead at all and feather the new plaster into the original bead :D
 
I would not use a bead, cut the skim back on the bead with a sharp Stanley so you have somewhere to tie it in. Maybe a bodge but works
 
I wouldn't use any beads or even multifinish. Use filler and blend it to the existing bead once dry light sand. A lot easier

Cool corner bead sounds like it is going to be fine then!

I'm interested in the idea of using a filler over the existing plaster and blend into the existing bead - would a joint compound suffice as the filler?

I always use stop beads around window reveals on skims. Works good if there is skirting on as you don't get that build up on the facing wall. Also down the edges of chimney reveals.. Sometimes.. All depends. Do what you think is best. Don't pay over odds for them

Ready mix joint compound is ok couple of tight coats will do the trick.

Thanks everyone for your guidance and wisdom and for answering so swiftly! I feel more confident now with what I need to do in order to make a decent job of it!
