It's a bit like the American (maybe old) stucco system on timber frame. The building paper gives something to push against, used chicken wire spaced out from the building paper with special nails which had a tar impregnated paper spacer to hold it clear of the building paper. Thick rendering. Seemed to work OK, but probably better systems now.
Rendalath from Bekaert Link Removed is a ready prepared system which should take render more easily. Rendering boards and the various thin coat systems seem like they may be an easier solution.
Others will have to advise on how good the different ones are.
