If you have the time make up 3 or 4 little batches and leave to dry, this will give you an idea of best ratio to use

Oli the original pointing has weatherd so he's not to bothered really it's just on a porch he's had built so was thinking 3 sand 1 snow create what you think

Is 3:1 not too strong?

I would normally go 4:1 sometimes 5:1 but have used 3:1 on occasions depending on what ya doing so, yes sometimes it can be a bit strong but sometimes it's not. Hope that clears it up :RpS_crying: :RpS_laugh:

Generally you do not want the mortar to be stronger than the brick itself however when you are re pointing you are only filling a little of the bed and perp joint so you need it to be strong so it all stays strong together, if you get what I mean?

Could use 4sand 1 cement 1/2 lime too

3+1 would be to strong and likely to crack in time try and get it the same as the morter the bricks are laid in probably 5 or 6 to 1 strong cement rich pointing mixes popular in 50s to the late 70s are now frowned upon.
