I've had a specialist round to look at a damp wall. He advises hacking off all the render then applying lime render so it can breath, followed by dot and dab insulated board and skim. This sounds like b*ll***s to me? Why would you lime render a wall to dot and dab board onto it?

What's your thoughts? I had planned to hack it all off, bitumen paint the wall, batton, board and skim but wanted an 'experts' take on it and that's what I got

He probably means limelite render which is used over damp walls

Why do you think your wall is damp?
I'm assuming moisture travelling through the bricks when it rains. Roofs solid and there's a damp proof course so I can't think of anything else. Just seems odd she's lives there for 7 years and only been an issue for the last year

Had the same thing, turned out to be condensation. They swore it was damp but when they left had it properly checked out. No damp whatever.

Think I'm going to go for my original plan, it's only a small areas so probably looking at 3 sheets of insulated board with vapour barrier, £150 max materials for everything. Damp proof guy quoted £1200

Bitumen the wall blind it with sharp sand and then use sand and cement with waterproofer

if the wall has a dpc is there not a cavity ? Or are you talking about a chemical doc ? If there is a cavity it is probably bridged by debri at bottom of cavity which can be done externally and, if internal plaster has not blown or been killed by the damp there may not be a need for internal work.

I just meant damp proof course of bricks with plastic membrane on top. Definitely only single skin.

if that's the case you need to create a cavity by build ing a stud or metal rail wall internally which is totally independent of the wall.

If its a single course of bricks you p!ssing in the wind. Is it just single brick wall you need to stud an internal wall.

If its a multi brick single wall I would do same with that but if rendered on outside the render may be keeping damp in the bricks which cant dry out. But even so, not a great design.

Kevin Keegan, yes you're right to suggest dab onto lime is b*ll***s. Insane idea. I would also as already suggested stud off with roofing felt as barrier, moisture board with insulation infills and skim.

Good I'm glad it's not just me thinking the guys an idiot
