Hey quick question.
seen a post on here from a guy saying if he's over coating old skimmed walls, he mixes a bita sand into his pva, coats the wall with that then skims straight over it the next day.
Anyone else do this? Is the key good enough? If so saves me 30 quid on a tubs of thistle bond-it lol

thanks

I have heard a few Lads say they done this with success, I've pva'd the day before on low suction glossy walls and they've skimmed up a treat.

There's no real harm in adding some sand or multi to PVA on medium/low suction backgrounds, but on very low suction backgrounds, you're better off using a bonding agent ^_^

The rougher the better! For zero suction backgrounds, PVA needs to be almost neat with 30% sand. Leave to dry fully (the plaster will reactivate the PVA), otherwise, it will go off very quickly and you'll be left with a sticky mess ^_^

And what u recon for medium suction backgrounds. Maybe old skimmed walls with patches of paint here n there etc?
and always coat the walls on day after pva/sand application?

im all excited about this lol

There's no need for grit on medium suction walls. Apply PVA at 5:1 or 3:1 and watch for the following:

A reaction with the paint, it may loosen or begin to flake off: this means that the paint has not bonded properly.

The time it takes to for the PVA to go tacky: this will give you an indication of how much suction is in background. Some areas may go tacky before other areas, for example, the patches where there are paint will be of lower suction.

Leave PVA to go tacky if you want to plaster on same day ^_^

I think you will find there is every need for Tru Grit !! And if you doubt my word!? Then ask @roostercogburn and see what he says!! :rolleyes)
