hi there

i mixed some pva up with water about 3 months ago but had a fair bit left so poured the remains back in the empty pva tub and put cap back on, i got a job coming up and wondered if this pva would still be ok to use or should i buy a new tub. the mix smells a bit funny so not sure what to do.

pva does smell like a pair of me old socks. :o if your not sure about i'd buy a new tub. but it should be ok.
 
i do it all the time mate, saves money why not? dunno bout 3 months though...
i once had a tub of sbr that had the same treatment and left in the shed for about a year, used it to seal a floor before i latexed it and no worries....
 
think you only have problem if it's not been stored properly. frost getting to it ruins it :(. i'm a thistle bond it fan. ;D.
 
Should be fine mate, no shelf-life on PVA as far as I'm aware. Just give the tub a good shake as the PVA will have sunk to the bottom of the tub.

I always mix my PVA in a big trade paint tub...cleaned of course.

My other half is a caterer and she brought home an massive empty tub of mayonnaise once which seemed ideal for PVA. I cleaned it out and left it to soak in water overnight. Filled it to the brim with PVA. Bob's yer uncle, Fanny's yer aunt and Dick's yer Dad....or so I thought. About a week later it was giving off the most horrendous eggy sulphur smell you could imagine. This stuff was overpowering and the labourer was practically heaving.
Had to tell a customer it was an extra special treatment for sealing the walls...and at no extra cost  ;D  
 
duno why but if you tip old pva into new pva after a week or so it stinks.. my guess would be bacteria...still works for me anyway..
 
it is the water in it that goes stagnant but it is fine to use if you can put up with the smell. [smiley=lolk.gif] [smiley=lolk.gif]

uuurgh... my head hurts... just reading what i put last night... cant even remember bein on the computa..

just to let you know used the pva and had no problems with it worked a treat, thanks for the advice
