A rookie question from me....you're going to get a few of them over the next few months.

Do you need to use PVA all the time? The reason I ask is when i plastered my house after a re wire I didnt use any and think I only had 1 wall that dried to quick this one looked older than most of the others. Also its been on a couple of years now and doesnt seem to be any problem with adhesion. It was all previous skim with mat paint. Was I lucky or is it all going to fall off the walls in a couple of years or are their situations when you wouldnt need it.

By the way i don't ask cos i'd want to save 50p and half an hour painting it on, it's more just for understanding.

If this is true...I might try it myself:wtf:

Try the sucker test on it

The sucker holder in car or van (for phone or tomtom on window)stick it on wall and pull...that will show if it has stuck to the wall:tanguero:

Yep skim over paint, used hardwall to fill out the runs from the wires.

The plasterman - I just didnt use pva as at the time I was winging it and didnt know I had to. Tenant in the house now so can't go trying to pull plaster off the wall, i'd have to sort it out then. Non of the walls ever really sounded hollow, if it wasnt stuck right i would have thought it would of cracked

I take it from the reaction then that pva is always required.

Que uni-finish aka plasterman:sisi:
Well ok then...@Lodan most old surfaces that are skimmed require a key for the new plaster (I.e bg multifinish) by using a pva to seal the old surface and help the said plaster to stick to the old....however ...if you don't want to pva and want to use a plaster that has properties inbuilt and designed for plasterers of the 21st century....I would advise bg thistle unifinish it gives a superior finish to all products on the market and has the benefit of not having to dribble all the pva down your arms and on skirting boards and coving...and it's been tried and tested on all surfaces to not fall off with the sucker test....caution is advised on high suction backgrounds.:bananahappy: :numberone::frenetico::rebotando::rock:

Flynnyman - was that question for me? If it was could you expand as i'm not sure what you're reffering to.

The plasterman - As I said in the first post its nothing to do with not wanting to pva, I was being a diy bodge-it and didnt know you needed to use it. Im just trying to broaden my understanding. To re-phrase the question are there any low suction backgrounds where pva isnt required. The uni sounds interesting but is it worth it price wise? I think I saw someone say they got it for £6 per bag if jo bloggs can get that price i'd use it.

No it wasn't meant for you

Ah I get it now, some of the other responses hadnt shown up on my tablet

Which is 6 months and how many weeks?
Sorry mate used on all surfaces I skimmed everyday for 6 months prior to release , bg tested it with other spreads as well I don't know how long they did or who they were...before I got batches bg plasterers had tested it as well to the best of my knowledge.

in hiding? Why? probably asked a daft question but if you dont ask you dont get an answer....to be honest dont think I ever got an actual answer just some very unfunny comedy vid and a jibe about not slamming doors....never was justifying that I didnt use it but as it didnt wreck the plaster was wondering if any situations when pva wasnt needed. If no is the answer I would have been happy with that.

plasterman - I know they hate your love of uni I've read it a few times....every product needs a voice though if not nothing new would ever take off....never fear innovation and keep banging that drum if you believe in it.

And don't worry about me, my skins so thick its like a rhino's foreskin.

A. Plasterer - You're a tit.....ask danny to ping our ip addresses....no nothing sbout computers, hope you know more about plastering.

Anyone know if any substrates dont need PVA? Ive tried but no answers. Not required for board but anywhere else not required? Maybe a stupid question but would love an actual answer

They all need pva if it's not a fresh backing coat or a new board

only two things dont need pva as said already by theplasterman, boards and fresh float and set, and i dont think you have to worry about the float and set
