Hi everyone.

I am getting made redundant in a few months, and I am going to re-train to become a plasterer. (I am aware that the work can be dryer than a nuns crotch).

Basically my current job is allowing me one day off a week to skive or re-train in something, and I want to know if you experts (note the attempted brown nosing) think it would be best to start off learning the skills on one of them 10 day courses, or instead use the day a week to work as an unpaid plasterers labourer to learn the skills?

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Rik

Hi Rik

Welcome to the forum mate - sorry to hear about the redundancy........

I'm sure that you will draw some comment - almost certainly in both directions!

If you have never done any proper plastering, it would be an idea to probably do a bit of both..... get some formal training and the out on some jobs!

Were exactly are you based? how far do you want to travel for the training / site experience?

Good luck to you!

Hi Runswithscissors

I live in Stoke on Trent and I know that I can do one of them plastering courses here, but I just wanted to get advice on whether you guys think I would learn more as a Labourer one day a week, than I would doing a 10 day course?

Again, I would be greatfull for any advice.

Cheers.

youll get some nice comments mate but get ready with your tin hat for the piss take

Rick get as much experience as you can but remember if you're a realist it will take a few years to get anywhere near competent, forget a quick course full stop it's someone showing you what to do and you have a go as time goes on you'll understand what I mean, it's catch 22 you don't want a labourers wage day in day out but unfortunately a good spread can have a lad for 35-40 quid a day......you're shout mate pay to be trained and get nowhere or live in a cardboard box and have a moderate living in 5 years

Our lass only gives me 35/40 a day and im alrate, drunk but orate
dont expect to make a fortune mate! go to work take it all in and when ya can do it then crack on. I only work 8 till2 every day dont make a fortune and i have no interest in working my knackers off to do so, small house small bills and am able to do what i want when i want

good luck

Nice one mate, I thought that one of them courses would probably only teach me the bare minimum, but wanted to make sure. I suppose I'm quite lucky because I am in a position to be able to work along side a plasterer for free, as I will still be getting paid from my current job.

Cheers again spunky

Hi rikkent22 . What is it about plastering that makes it appealing to you as a job and what are you doing at the moment . Good luck which ever way you choose to learn .

Hi Beader

Well I have worked for a big pharmaceutical company since leaving school, and although the wage has been good there are just too many knobs that do hardly any work and seem to get away with everything, so I decided that being self employed is the only option.
Also, I was advised to do something that I love and with only an averaged size pecker (8"), it ruled being a porn star out.
But seriously, I have always enjoyed DIY etc. and used to love helping my Dad when he was a painter and decorator, so thought this would be the way top go.

Cheers again mate
