Just come across this new term - quirking - its the traditional method of cutting back the plaster to a (wooden) bead - seen it order houses but never new what it was called! Is it a viable method of solving cracking to wooden beads? anyone got any experience of using it?

it is an option if the customer wants it, i have done it a few times and it can look good. for the best results cut back the old plaster first so that it doesn't cause irregularity's in your newly formed quirk then sand down the wooden bead to get all the old shite off and when you start skimming, on about your second trowel i use the ring part of my house key and pinch it between my finger and thumb and run it up and down the parts of the wall that meet with the bead but making sure that i rub the top of my finger on the bead to keep the depth of the quirk the same. you can also run these in plaster and have no wood but get the same affect, am sure there are probably more ways to do this ass well.

but defiantly check with the customer as this gives a bit of a traditional feel to the room and they might want it to look more modern ;)
