I've noticed a lot on here are pissed of with plastering and they're are numerous threads related to shite prices and old age creeping up.

what is everyone's general feeling towards re training

as stated on another thread one of my mates (age 37) quit his job in the cops and spent the last 4 months and best part of 10 k inc tools training to be a heating engineer..

my reckon is if he gets a job he will get good payback on that he has approx 30 yrs left on decent rates in a field protected by law.

my mate has opened my eyes to how hard plastering is. He is bathroom fitter/time served tiler makes more money doing that than plastering although he's half decent on the trowel. I've been learning a lot from him on the tiling side and it's so much easier on the old bones??

anyone else got any new yr training planned?
 
Seems going offshore is the new Tradesman boom.........the youngin ive got on has spend nearly 2.5k on training to go offshore........**** loads of training companies spinning the " earn loads of money when qualified" like they did with the trade courses

A lad i used to drink with worked at Nissan as a maint fitter and they have lost loads and loads of fitters to offshore work and Nissan are good payers apparently, your talking they were walking away from 50k a year in some cases.

got a lot of mate that work off shore also got alot that done alot of courses and cant get a job. they all want experienced blokes.
But if you can get off your laughing my best mat is on 60K as a sparks
 
Thats why i got a machine ,to save my old bones ,you can move on in all trades ,but still do the same as you always have done :RpS_confused: i think i lost myself there :RpS_unsure:
 
Iv completed the citb site managers smsts course, and hold a first aid certificate. Soon as I start struggling on the tools im straight in the office to become one of those hated site agents lol.

I suppose its a natural progression when you train youngins up that they will go off on there own at some point. But like most jobs you need experience. i hope he manages to get off shore so he can recoup his training costs but he's got marra's that took 4-5 years to get off shore
 
i wanted to do a C A D course and get in maybe at my wifes company (civil engineering) my plan was while i was at home looking after the baby i would do this aswell, But i couldent be fcuked and i found TPF now i just want to be a plasterer till in dead

loads of lads that got finished at Alcan have ended up at Nissan or offshore............I nearly ended up at Nissan a few years back when i was struggling with very little graft....................if you get on in the battery shop for the new electric cars you've a job for life they reckon

yep its not easy one of my mates just lied about his exp and got a job then bullshatted the rest , hes doing ok.
there is also the wind farms that are paying ok and taking on loads of people

got a few marra's re trained to divers and are on mega money doing wind turbine fits....................wankers...................:RpS_laugh:

I tile aswell mate, its just as heavy as plastering, especially floors 600x600 tiles are fukin heavy... kitchens are easy tho, but tilings bad on the knees and back.... good to get into tho, as i get the plastering and the tiling... a lot of people like that ..

I bet your glad now you didn't end up at Nissan arti, my mates in there and can't fucin stand the place clocking in and out like a robot , you even got to put a different coloured hat on when you go for a piss so they know where your going, feck that
 
i will never give up what i do for a job i have to clock in or ask some jumped up thick c**t if i can go for a piss.
 
I remember my old gaffer moaning at one of the apprentices...... "You've had ALL WEEKEND to have a sh1te!!!" :RpS_lol:
 
I re trained as a bespoke kitchen fitter did two years at it but missed working for myself and sad as it sounds missed plastering . I enjoyed fitting but it was a lot of traveling all over country. There's a lot to be said for working local
 
So why not do side line on the kitchens.locally ??

I did shoit loads of training for Cad and solid works (3D draughting) worked in engineering for a time and office politics are worse than dealing with ar#ey customers and builders, walked away from very good money for very little effort to come back to this and this is where personally i'm happiest plastering and building work. Must admit the CAD training comes in handy cos you can do your own drawing as save /make more dosh on jobs.
 
Offshore windfarms, theres some serious money being made in that game doing the crew transfers if you have a spare 300k for a nice boat.

I do about one a month local but I get bored kitchen fitting is a easy job compared to plastering, I like turning a mess into something good. Fitting is just fixing units most of time and a butt and scrib worktop. Maybe I'm just weird I like a challenge
 
worked offshore for 10 years ( fireproofing and tiling ) its very difficult getting a start unless you know someone.. and the monies not that great, but you work when your home for 2 weeks, that makes the money very good. as you spend fuk all offshore...

they cost fcuk all now but i was thinking more of a manufacturing job role. its gonna be the next big thing!

I was looking at them to make prototypes etc cos of the contacts i have in engineering and then thought ahh fluke it cos then i remembered how much i disliked working in that field and frankly i'm totally over shmoozing peep's :RpS_wink:
 
I've been thinking lately that theres got to be an easier way to make money rather than plastering. Just spent the whole weekend doing a loft conversion where the only water supply was downstairs toilet and house was carpeted throughout with family still living there, absolute nightmare of a job. Twelve hour shift on a Saturday while everyone else is out getting pissed, off my head.

dont you just feel like saying "give me your clothes your boots and your motor cycle :RpS_mellow: " ore is just me?
 
I know that feeling well and done it many times, I especially hate lofts being tall, that said though I have done the same shift you have described , the only comfort is that you are ( or at least should be) getting well paid for it. I hope this was the case for you
