Hi everyone.

Im looking for some advice for an old stone cottage i bought last year. Its a tradition type croft house built around 1850. Walls are about 3ft thick and a mixture of whin and granite. and built using lime mortar. the house has been rendered on the outside and its pretty much boss nearly all over and its safe to say it needs to come off. i would like to Render the house again but im wondering whats the best product. I was planning to remove the old render then give the walls a good power wash and re point the stonework with cement once dry, before i apply the scratch coat. Whats the best way to get something to stick to these stones? couple of coats of PVA or use an sbr slurry and then scratch it once it goes tacky with a 4-1 ratio?
I had planned to use snowcrete and have a smooth finish instead of a wet dash.

Look forward to your advice.

thanks,

Repoint with lime.
Don't use PVA, it re-emulsifies.
Don't use SBR, it forms a barrier and you want the walls to breathe.

You'll need to clean down the dust and old render really well, wet, and re-apply a lime render. This will look pale like snowcrete.

Agree with above. DON'T USE GYPSUM on solid walls (no cavity). Lime breathes gypsum (cement) draws in water.

Have you though of EWI - external wall insulation render. Can be applied to increase UV value of your house. Also think there is a grant for solid wall houses.
