Hi

I am in the middle of a new build house and want advice on what type of finish to place on the external block leaf. There is approx 300sqm to be plastered.

I have been looking into different renders (silicone, acrylic, etc) but am not sure which would be the best solution.

The premixed (bucket) coloured Parex render has been suggested to me by my plasterer which he said would be applied as a trowel finish. From looking into this product I can only see examples of where it is installed over an external insulation board, which I would not have.

I suppose the question is, can Parex (or similar silicone & acrylic product) be applied to a new build house that will not have insulation installed on the outside?

Are there any better products that i should look at to get the desired effect (as maintenance free a finish as possible) ?

Any help is much appreciated.

Yes they can but if your looking for a coloured render for block work just use parex monorex, it's not a bucket coat render it's a scrape finish colored render .

Thanks for you reply. The house is being built in Ireland, the planning office only specified that a maximum of 2 types of finish are permitted and i have some stone build on some parts of the house.

Welcome to the forum,

We are distributors of Mapei External Wall Insulation systems, we also have a 'coatings' system from Mapei which is perfect for your property.

A maintenance free product would be 'Silancolour Tonachino' which has a 1.5mm aggregate as standard. This product can be tinted into 1000's of different colours, it is a pre-mixed material (similar to Parex) which can be hand or spray applied.

The system we would supply would be the Mapei Mapetherm Render Only system which comprises of: Nivoplan as your base-coat. This will be applied at 12mm with a mesh bedded into it. (British Standards state onto block you must have a base-coat of 12mm) Followed by a Primer and finally your Silicone Top Coat.

If you wish to discuss this system in more detail and get a quote please do not hesitate to call

The bucket coats can be put on solid render but you need to consider the drying time. Acrylics dry by air and can take days or even a week or two to dry. If it rains meanwhile and being in Ireland it never stops raining then consider a Monocouche render but find someone who can apply it. Your plasterer may well talk you into something he wants you to have. If it is over 20m2 then find someone who can machine apply.
