I'll keep it short.

Garden wall - retaining. 16ft x 5ft, back skin concrete block, front cheap and nasty facing bricks which have blown capped with blues on their side. Wall can't be more than 10 years old. Chap wants it rendered as its ugly as hell. Not sure if theres a drainage problem someone had cut in new 50mm draining holes though.

Do I render it or will it just blow off if the wall still has drainage problems. Theres more work at the place, both inside and out so I'd like to pick the chap up as a regular. You guys know FAR more than I do about rendering. Thoughts.

If its a retaining wall and backfilled it's got a lot of water trying to find its way out and some of this will come through the render and make it look pretty grotty . If you can dig out behind the wall and lay visqueen up against the block (on the inside) and back fill with gravel to help drainage.

One coat render the front of the wall smooth, Tank front of the wall with whatever is recommended then render over again.

Im no expert in this particular field but this gives you an idea

Dig the back out and seal it with Bituthene, never use Visqueen as it cannt be sealed properly and the water will get behind it and make matters worse ive seen it happen very costly mistake. You then should lay a French drain in shingle to take away the build up of water and if possible but some decent size weep holes in the wall above the drain just incase.

do as lucius says but first coat on front of wall must be a spaterdash coat and let it dry a bit before second coat

the customer is the quantity surveyor, the building inspector and the site manager mate if he's asked you to render it just render it ......if he hasnt backfilled it etc thats his problem not yours .......if youre struggling for a key on the bricks give it a 2/1 cement/sand mixed with sbr slurry and fire the same mix onto it while its tacky with a tiro.....terol......tyrolean gun and render away mate

No Spunky wrong again most customers aint got a clue only the end product they want, explain the correct method of operation, if you know it and then their is a chance of doing the job properly and getting more money if the customer wont listen at least youve covered your butt when it all goes wrong.
Lucius.

and when it all goes wrong who decides its wrong and where does the problem lie

The problem lies when the render pops of the wall the first winter of heavy rain when the customer expects it to stay on a lifetime.
Lucius

lucious mate all im trying to say is if you get asked to do a job then within reason do it ....were not all general builders and by the sound of it there shouldnt be any reason for future damp probs
