Rendering advice

Alright folks , can anyone advise on how to achieve the best finish for render - Does a decent scratch coat make a differnce ? I only ask cos I never used to pay much attention to the scratch thinking that the top coat is the one to get perfect - Did a job the other day and the sun was on it pretty much all day. I struggled to drop back and start rubbing up cos it was drying out too quick and went all 'dusty' when I tried to float and sponge it - Cut a long story short , it looked shite with a coat of paint on and have spent a day with an SDS drill taking the lot off back to the original brickwork

So I'm back to square one with a clean canvas so to speak and I want to get it spot on - The wall is 10m x 3m

My next plan was to hit maybe half of it once sratched and concentrate on getting that spot bollock on and only then do the next 5m using the 'perfect' bit as a kind of box screed ?

There was only 2 of us doing it , maybe I need another to start rubbing up while the other 2 finish getting the top coat on ?

What do you guys do and what ratio of s/c should I be using for scratch and top coat and what good does washing up liquid do ?? Should I be using a waterproofer in scratch or top or neither ??

Any advice greatly received , cheers

The scratch can be darbied if you want, whats the substrate new or old? if its old brickwork id get it straight first, is suction on existing brick/blockwork exessive? if it is Kill it rend aid/ SBR slurry ect, 30m2 is`nt a massive area but then again i dont know your capabilities, use waterproofer in the scratch this will hold the top coat back a bit if you want use retarder in the top coat this should buy you a bit of time, Start a bit earlier in the morning and try to get it on by half 10 or 11, wash out then spend more time on the finish.

feb is alot cheaper than mild green fairy lip squid
Quite right leave the washing up liquid alone its for washing up not construction, feb has been invented by the experts to be used in mortar

make sure you put a mcdonalds coffee cup of waterproofer/plasticiser/retarder in every barrowful/mix of scratch coat then your float coat will go like a dream...
get yer lad to mix up, get a couple of barrows on the go, always have one in the mixer ready, you lay it on, then when its ready get the lad to start floatin up, youll have no worries...
to be honest you should find you can lay all your float on ruled up, have some lunch ( or a late breakfast) and spend the afternoon flaoting up...(stick a bit of waterproofer in yer float coat ;))
get yer scratch coat nice and flat too, that way the float coat will all go off at the same speed so you wont be jumping about all over the place with the float as it dries patchy...
