just been to see a job, the house is flat rendered with the drawn on brick like again. has a small porch then the front door, the porch used to be arched above like the rest of the street, but some one put a timber across square and bricked up and rendered it again so its now a square door way. they would now like an arch put back in as it looks crap compared to the rest of the street. just a few questions on how to go about this.

is it best to take out timber and a few bricks and fix a arch former, then render that (never used sand and cement on an arch !)

and the second thing I'm unsure about is when iv done the arch way i will need to make it look good ie patch it in to the rest of the front of the house witch is the drawn on block style render. what is the best way to go about patching in this with out it looking very obviously patched in.

as you lot no i lack experience in the S&C so looking to gain the knowledge and if the customers are happy for me to attempt the job at a small price.

I'm sure Chris w will no wots best here!

Hi oasis, Can't you knock the timber and the brick work down and expose the original arch ?. Then you can see what you are up against. Got to be better than trying to build a new arch, and then trying to render it. Does this make any sense ?

yea see wot you saying there, i guess i would still need some kind of rendering arch bead? and also with the flashing in to the rest of the house? whats the best way to approach this?
ta

look im not the best renderer but have worked with some top notch chaps in my time and the only way to blend s+c in decent is with a wood float a couple of different sizes would be usefull and make sure you get good clean sand

You could use hard board as a former........As i can't see the job just taking a guess, you need to consider you're options how to form it, then render.
