Hi, newbie to the forum so Hi to everyone. :-)

I am undergoing a building project but before starting on the house I am looking to sort out the boundary wall. I am planning on putting in a 3ft blockwork wall at the side of the property and then rendering this. Once finished I will look to attach a fence on top of the wall.

The new wall will be retaining the garden as this is higher than the pavement the other side. On the pavement side I don't want block work showing so wanted it rendered. I am just trying to find out what the best type of render may be for the wall. The property is in a very exposed position so will get a lot of weathering and it is also close to the beach so this may make a difference (salty air etc).

I was thinking something like K rend but I see some people on here dont rate it as highly as some other makes. I am also concerned about discolouration as some rendered garden walls I see look terrible after not very long. So.... what would you recommend for a project like this?

Thanks in advance
Greg

Welcome Gregory (cracking name by the way :RpS_wink: ) I think any form of rendering on a garden wall will not last as long as a nice face brick but there is a product called wallcrete some of the lads rave about on here so you might want to have a shifty at that? Can't remember off top of my head who is best to ask??
No doubt one of the lads will point you (no pun intended) in the right direction !? :RpS_thumbup:
Good luck with it

Where it gets the weather it may keep clean but North and East tend to get dirty or go green. Maybe a silicone monocouche like K Rends or SAS Europe does one. There are also silicone synthetics and paints or even the so called Nano Technology finishes at a price. Even then they only self clean on the wet side.

For me flat render with a silicone based paint.

Thanks Oli :RpS_thumbup: .....oh yeh the new guy, sorry :RpS_laugh:

your always welcome me old fruit and nut :RpS_thumbup: what are those green biscuits under the avatar? are they like warnings, one more pair of thrupenny bits and your oot! wait hang on I've got them too :RpS_scared:

Am not sure if they are a counter as to how many times you've logged on that day?? Or if you get to ten? @Danny gives us a golden trowel ?? :RpS_laugh:

rendering garden wall

Welcome along Greg, Remember before you back fill up to your new wall it will need to be tanked somehow or whatever render you put on the front face of the wall will not last very long due to penetrating water from the soil.

I thought we were same age bud, I must be thinking of your lass. Ive just noticed your age, Im 37 years young :RpS_thumbsup:

i would go with a s&c render , use a good rendering sand or a fine sharp sand , add a decent waterproofer like " sovereign " , but you are going to get some staining on the render once you put a fence on top , cant see that not happening .

Wow that's a lot of replies, thanks for all your help (and the pictures of the tits)!

Jamesthefirst. I only mentioned k rend not being great from looking at posts from plasterers who seem to feel it is not the easiest render to apply and that there are others out there which give as good a finish and are easier to use.

It seems like most are in agreement that a normal sand and cement render will suffice. Now I don't have a clue how long this would take or approx costs, could someone help me out. Wall is going to be approx 1m high by 15m long. It would need rendering on the front edge and the top (probably about 20cm wide)

thanks again

Don't render the top it will fail. You need copings preferably with a drip on the underside.
