rendering on cob

is it possible to render (s&c) on a cob wall,without using mesh?had it out with a builder today,he said why don`t u scat first,then 2 coat.whenever i`ve done it,i use lime or mesh then render.

I may well be wrong here , but whenever we have done cob we have used lime render so that the cob can breath and not dry out , that was my limeted understanding of it

Cob has to be NHL or better lime putty.

It has to be NHL 3.5
