rendering over dash

went to price a job yesterday for some wally trying to renovate a building into student flats. was allsorts going on there. he had his brickie/plasterer useing k-rend straight over dash. in one coat. no mesh. :-\ can this be done??

K-rend say you can as long as the substrate is sound and clean

i'd still base coat it you wouldnt want the odd stone sticking through
