Hi everyone

New to the plasterers form, so a warm hello to you all.

Currently re fitting a bathroom in a Victorian house, all the old lime render is off, now the old brickwork is not the best the wall could do with rendering to strengthen it. The bricks are porous.

My question is, can I just apply two coats of sand and cement render with waterproofer in the ratio of 4:1:1 straight on to the bricks. The first being the scratch coat and hence apply the second coat. My worry is will the cement render may not be compatible with the lime pointing of the brick work and hence may cause moisture issues in the future.

The original plan was to take the old render off and dot and dab with plasterboard and plaster over.
Sorry if this seems like a silly question, not a plasterer by trade.

Kind regards
Sunny.

Thanks Artisan for your reply.

To be honest that was my intention as well, just thought if the weight of the adhesive and plaster board have an issue with the wall.

It is the easiest solution so might just stick with that and get on with the fitting.

Thanks again.

Sometimes the dabs can draw moisture from the wall if it is an exposed wall and sand and cement with waterproofer in can cause a bit of condensation as the walls don't breath that well though most people fully tile these days so thats going to happen anyway another option is Gypliner system but it will make the room a tad smaller.

Make sure the room has good ventilation though or is fully tiled. Otherwise you might get condensation sitting on top of the waterproofed scratch coat.

Thanks alot for all you responses I really appreciate it. The general consensus is it put a scratch coat on then dot a dab with plasterboard. A little extra work but no matter the room is a complete strip out and refit including re plumbing, besides the wall isn't really that large so just get on with it.

Just to confirm the ratio I would be using would be 4:1:1 including waterproofer. The room is to be fully tiled in due course.

Thanks again

Sunny.
