Had a smallish section of wallpaper come away from wall. Removed the wall paper and the plaster has blown in a few areas.
It looks like it is red brick wall then 20mm sand cement then a final smooth finish. The external side of the wall is sandstone and very exposed to elements and 50 meters from North Sea coast. There is a cavity between external stone an internal red bricks.
I have been reading lots here but can't seem to find the answer to my question:

After removing blown material and cleaning wall should I pva (50/50) the brick and surrounding sound sand/cement/skim coat. Before I use a 4:1 sand/cement mix with added 3 in 1 retarder, waterproofer & plasticiser?

Thanks for any advice.

So I have rendered the patches and it seems to be drying nicely.

Only problem I have is, I had problem getting on enough render next to window, the render is 11mm from finished level near window but 8mm everywhere else. So can I just use 2 coats of multi finish (pva s&c first) or should I do a thin layer of sand and cement them 2 muti?

Cheers

The problem I had was getting the render on thick enough next to the window.
There is now an 11mm difference between render and finished wall at the window side of patch and about 8mm for the rest of the patch.

So can I use 2 coats of multi finish (pva render first) to finish off or should I use another coat of render?

Cheers for any help.

I was impatient last night so I gave it another coat of sand & cement. So I now have about 2mm for the multi finish. Fingers crossed it will be OK.
Thanks

I've just seen a golden eagle fly past that window! You don't see many of them this time of year:flapper:

Yep very much a DIY repair. Next year/ November I will be getting a in a pro. The external wall I am patching will need taking back to brick and insulating/plasterboarding then skimming, the ceiling overboarded and skimmed and the partition wall will need the lath and plaster removing both sides and plasterboarding and then skimming.
Unfortunately this year I have not got funds or time to get this done.

So yes very much DIY but it is giving me a great insight into how skilful plasterers are.

Forgot to say the second coat of render did not take! I went to knock of the scratch ridges and it was soft and not bonded to the scratch coat. So I very easily scratched second coat off.
I am going to use bonding to build out to within 2mm of finished surface, then multi finish in 2 coats.

Really it doesn't need to be anywhere near perfect as it will have dreaded wood chip over the top.

Thanks for all the posts on here. It's a great help to gain some understanding of the skill of plasterers.

Did a coat of bonding then 2 coats of multi. It's not going to win any prizes but I am pleased with the results.
