With the uk weather as it is...was thinking today is it best to recommend to customers to have a tyrolean finish or roughcast etc (when using sand and cement)...for added protection against weather and ourselves against cracks?

check out this table...it suggests where exposure is severe that tyrolean/roughcast is used, i would say a gable end gets severe exposure....

not sure what the IV under designation means?

Interesting that document recommends

portland cement:lime:sand

1:1:5 base coat

1:2:8 top coat

anyone go that weak on the top?

Catnic used to do a map showing the different areas of the country and whether they were class as sheltered, moderate or severe exposure.
I think you will find that on a previous page (you are on page 4 of 4 I think) there would have been I, II, III and IV and what mix ratio they represent.
Yeah I often go that weak on top coat.

So Andy enlighten me is this info based on bristish standards? why do so many people recommend 1:4 base 1:1:5 top? theres a considerable difference between 1:1:5 and 1:2:8
