I am looking at a chimney breast that could poss have hygroscopic salt poison to the bricks from the burning of the coal/fuel over time. it has been stripped so I aint seen the effected plaster but there is no penetration from an external source high or low.

Anyone done this work before and what product do they recommend as this kind of poison can eat its way back through even after treatment.

Thanks

yeah i considered it paul but looks like due to windows and a new fitted modern fire surround that will be a no no.

Not sure what you mean hygroscopic salt poison what I use antisulphate liquid to control salting it prevents the passage of hygroscopic salts from the substrate.
hope this helps.

something like a chemical i recon henry yeah its to stop it coming back. when coal has been used it can somehow cause the wall/brickwork of the fireplace to be contaminated and since they have had the house done up and the fire plastered over to modernise they have had salt issues for ages

Ha I know what you mean now. I would you use the antisulphate give it a good soaking leave over night then use a antisulphate cement with the sand mix Ive had good results from this. When I was a lad working out in the sticks we had the same problem and this old spread sent me looking for cow s**t I had to fill a bucket of it, mix it then brush it over the salt and soot. Next day he renererd it.,I think looking back on it he may well have been taking the piss but in saying that
they use to put all sorts in lime mixes and I have also been for the plasterboard bucket from the formans hut T***s still looking for it.

I have came across this problem a few times. The best sugestion I had was to use sulphate resistant cement in the backing coats.
I used to do a lot of damp remedial work for Peter Cox preservation and it was suggested to me by one of their surveyors.
The sulphur released from burning fossil fuels is drawn through the plaster and often leads to yellow staining and a vile cat piss smell.
I have used this method on chimney breasts and inside opened chimneys with success.
I probably added a little waterproofer at the time too.

It was a long time ago and I remember having to order the cement from a specialist supplier.

tell you what i used when we had that cat piss smell and yellow/brown burning was marmorit sockel render..... worked a treat
