I have a back way of a terrace to render on the gable end, is the bathroom. This has the raked roof, you must have come across this your selves. No money in the pot for tube scaffold. So thinking back we use to have the tower lay boards from tower onto ridge tiles then treslles onto boards to reach apex. What would you lads do.

A few years ago i would probably done the same as you, but nowadays i really wonder it it worth the risk, i like the use of my legs , so it's a scaff or nothing i'm afraid for me now

Definitely wouldnt do that nowadays Henry just not worth the risk and if anything happened no insurance company in the world would entertain you. Makes me shudder when i think of what we used to do like three lifts of bandstands up the front of a house.

It's only about 6m2 of render to get off the top lift then it's all jam on my bread. Thinking back I ve seen lads doing gables of ladder brackets now they was silly days taking your life into your own hands LOL. happy days I do not think so.

We use to use them for render or pebble dashing , they hook onto the spells of the ladder and you would span two planks across hey presto instant scaffold.

Yeah tell 'em to get to the bank Henry - gone are the days of risking YOUR neck to save THEIR money, just ain't worth it :RpS_thumbup:

I have done loads of houses off cripples in the 70's and 80's. The builders and customers back then simply would refuse to pay for a scaffold and if you wanted the job you risked your life, it was as simple as that. Then the Health & Safety people woke up and tackled this selfishness. Now it would be near impossible to get a worker to work off cripples or towers and besides if they did fall they would sue your arse.

Definitely not worth the risk of death or injury to save some customer a bit of money. They really would not care less about you if you fell but they expect you to care about their cash. Cash can be replaced you can't. Bugger them and walk while you still can.

If theres no cash in the price for tube its very awkward asking for extra cash because you've not allowed for it so on this one i would make do and mend with a tower and planks but be sure to remember for next time. A scaffolder would charge about 150-200 for this its not worth risking really.

no money in pot? risk injury and compromise quality over access ? If they aint paying a decent crack then i would walk away, they need to be chucking money at you for that.
