Serrated straight edge! Any good?

I don't really do much rendering at all but have heard about serrated straight edges being the bees knees and showing up low spots.

Do you guys lay on, use normal straight edge fill hollows then use serrated edge, float it or just lay on, use serrated and fill hollows float it?

Might sound like stupid question but can't really find much information about them on the web.

I spray or apply then use the serrated edge. Fill out the hollows and serrate again until flat. Spat the lines out to smooth.

I use the serrated edge on bagged renders only, hsection or Darby for sand cement.

Essential bit of kit for the renderer is a serrated edge, it also gets you a feel of the wall.
