Hello chaps. Slight problem!
When flattening the top coat on a reskim the plaster started cracking and peeling back in large areas covering most of the wall. First coat went off very quick and where its cracked it clearly hasn't taken to the wall as it just falls off.
I pva'd yesterday then another 2 coats today as it was drying quicker than normal.
Still too much suction? What do you think?

Fellas, I get that its not prepped properly:RpS_blushing: How's about some advice on what I could do to correct it?

Hard to say without seeing it, sometimes a coat of bonding (undercoat plaster) is called for. Try and get some pics next time, if in doubt post them here and some one will advise

Are you a plasterer?

Most on here don't have the answer anyway, can you give a bit more detail re the wall you skimmed, type of paint, its shininess, whether the paint came off with the plaster, ps 70 per cent on here believe you need a specialist like plaster flown in from Italy if the words Victorian or Georgian is used..

Danny, substrate is a matt painted plaster. Grey undercoat (sand/cement?) with a white topcoat. Wallpapered in about the 60's but removed and no powdery residue. Paint obviously older and it is a Victorian house. Considered possibility of distemper and using a stabiliser but surface not powdery at all.
I pva'd 1:5 first, left overnight then 1:3 twice and still tacky when plaster applied.
Paint didn't come off with plaster.

Distemper on the walls ??

Distemper on the walls ??

was the paint a red/green/blue colour ?? and was it powdery to touch, if so, its distemper, you either got to get it all off, or overboard it... if not boarding it seal it very well, otherwise ur fuked..

is it your skim coat pulling off the previous skim coat if so pva to wet maybe?

if its the old skim coat and your skim coat coming off together then its the previous skim coat coat coming away from the backing coat which is what im suspecting? if so its a case of ensuring any loose is scraped first.

Also not suggesting you are 1coating but if so your going to be pulling against the loose background or wet pva apose to a fresh 2nd coat that's got a new 1st coat underneath.

Also I like to do a first coat with some bonding on these iffy sort of backgrounds on re-skims seem to hold up a bit better imo

Zombie

spend money on wba or blue grit , rather than playing with pva yourself ,you have tried and failed with pva ,if that fails get a plasterer in . ( no dig but could be cheaper)

doesnt knocking bonding into finish send it off quicker?

No Danny, Been doing it few years a few handulls per bag of finish....seem to be able to use a wetter mix than just finish alone but it covers over all the sins easier with less effort, fantastic over artex also.

Can use same principal with browning and hardwall over really friable backgrounds.

Try it mate you wont be disappointed!!!:RpS_thumbup:

2 coat PVA , when tacky bang on a tight coat of bonding, flatten it in and then skim it.

But im a plasterer and i dont know what im talking about apparently
