Skim cracking on joints!

Having had my first go at skimming a room following advice on the forum i was very pleased with the results .......until it had fully dried out It appeares to have hairline cracks from ceiling to floor at roughly the board joint areas. The boards were scrim taped then easi-filled as i was going to finish the boards that way then paint before deciding to plater them. The Easi fill areas were PVA/water treated before skimming, i`m assuming those areas dried out quicker hence the cracks despite there being no radiator in the room. Question is how i best remedy the situation, do i just scrape out the cracks and Easi-fill and if so do i PVA those areas before the filler goes in? Help greatly appreciated..........Martin

p.s The wife is standing over me with paint and a roller waiting to get some clour on the walls ::)

Just out of interest , was the p/ board dot & dab or on studwork? Was the board taperd edge ? and did you use paper tape or fibre glass scrim and how old was it ?

I don't like taper edged p/b and have had a few problems with it myself , but have never filled it with easy fill so not sure how it works underneath multi anyway , i think there should be a gap left in between the joint of the two boards not butted tight so you can fill in the gap and push it through so lips around behind the board strengthening the joint prior to the scrim and the taper being filled in , no one really does that much any more though one reason or another but it was something that was done back in the day before self adhesive tape was used .

Ive had this happen have you tryed to feel if where the crack is, it is raised slightly?

I think its because the boards shrink back a little when everything has completely dryed out.

Ive just sanded over with 120 grit paper and rolled over with paint and its barely visable after.

Ive got it a bit in some bedroom s in a house Ive been doing . d+b tapered edge 6x3 only on the horizontal joint s new scrim and two goodcoats of multi .done nothin different . i just put it down to the plumber whacking the heat up is square edge board better only ever used tapered ,think that's all Travis sell up my way :-\

I find if you skrim up boards/joints then coat with anything other than finishing plaster prior to skimming it tends to crack, I put it down to the under coat flexing on the joint more than the skim therfore causing the skim to crack, so if I have to bond out joints I like to skrim over the bonding rather than under it, if you get my drift.

That's your first problem you have d and d on to a very dry smooth surface you should have used a bonding agent eg thistle bont it

Done several other rooms in the house the same way, then used the tape, easi filled then painted, has been fine for the last 18 months ;D
Only difference is this time i skimmed it..................Martin
