when flattening in do you trowel one way or move in different directions with trowel action

I go side to side too, i find its the quickest way.

i lay on up and down, flatten off side to side.

just go up and down through out the stages and when ive flattened off and trowel'd up twice ill cross trowel it.... and thats your lot.

i know what you mean but do you trowel in one direction or can you go back over what you have trowelled

When i skim a wall i lay it on up and down from left to right as i am right handed.
Get the first coat on and give it a quick flatten before the second coat.
When i flatten it out i go from the top left to the right. Then drop it down what would be about a trowel length and go right to left, working my way to the bottom.
Its the same way you would mow a lawn if you know what i mean.
