hi everyone, the names dan.im looking for a course in the south west of england to get a c&g plastering qualification.I`ve visited cardiff for a course which looks amazing. im really excited to b a plasterer as ive laboured and laid on for a 2 years a few years ago. since then ive been going round and round basic £6ph jobs and want to provide a future for me and my girlfriend in years to come. also.....i want to go it alone from the start,i don`t wanna be told when to work, how to work and where to work, wanna be my own boss. if anyone has anyone has any advice on what to do where to start and so on it would be gratefully recieved. thanks muchly DAN x

Mate while course maybe a starting point it will by no means prepare you to go it alone.
Ideally get on with a couple of spreads that are willing to teach you.

Hi Dan Welcome to the forum

Firstly... I would not go it alone.... at least work with another spread.... It looks easy and what happens when you get a ceiling bigger than 15m2?!!

You cant learn everything on a course... it takes time and experience and then some people either have it or they dont :-)

I can guarantee that many people will tell you the same... Nothing wrong with going out getting work then subbing it out to an experienced spread while you learn the ropes. But in this day and age you will struggle you will get out shone by the more experienced plasterers and it will be obvious to the customer...

SO my advice... do the course learn as much as you can find a spread that needs a hand jump on with them learn the other side of the trade you dont get taught :-) then in a few years you will have everything you need.

The trade at the moment is in a big mess and it will be those new to the game that leave first.... I think I have said this before but there is know way you can buy experience and you cant fast track experience

being told when where and how to work is exactly what you'll need for a few year to become competent.

i have been thinking of doing that to be fair but it seems i`ll be labouring which i`ve had enough of.not many places will answer the phone and say "yeah we will take you on,pay you well and teach you".u always start at the bottom with companies when you have nothing to back it up with.

If you appear keen enough you may get someone to say "yeah we will take you on, and teach you". Don't know about "We will pay you well" although that's down to you as well, you need to EARN it mate:RpS_biggrin: Good luck though:RpS_thumbup:

unfortunately that's the way the game is.... offer to work for free at weekends :-)

after doing a course you are really only a good labourer that knows a bit... yes you can skim small bits and bobs and probably to a high standard but you wait when you have a nice long lounge wall that the sun catches... you will s**t yourself!

also the prices at the moment £220 to skim a lounge.... you will earn more working for £6 an hour.... not trying to be harsh but that is the reality of the trade at the moment. If time served plasterers are struggling a new chap is going to find it mega hard....

You say you dont want to be bossed about... you wait till you get a few customers... oh boy they are worst than any boss :-)

DO the course learn do little jobs at weekends try and get chatting to other spreads.... help them out on a saturday keep your current job till you can fill your weeks up :-)

Danny

But matey, why would someone pay you more than a labourers wage (200-300quid a week) when you cant earn them any money? it would take you atleast a year to be useful enough to earn the spread your working for ANY money.. to begin with you would just get under his feet, unless he has that much work that you were just mixing up and cleaning up all day, but as soon as you get on the tools he is trading his own time to teach you.. thus losing money..

thanks mate,i totally agree and understand.its probably the eagerness to earn big money that makes me think like this.thing is,the course is £2.800 not including £15 travel everyday for 5 weeks. suppose working with a spread is best but in bath where i live its a bit few and far between if you get me.

Plasterers don't earn big money any more. And the sooner these coursers start learning that the better the trade will be for real plasterers!

wow!!!

why dont you offer to pay a spread £2800 to teach you :-) or maybe £2k :-) A course is good will teach you what you need but in an ideal world take the advice straight from the horses mouth :-)

Then maybe after 6 weeks the spread will take you on :-)

Danny

f.ck me... give me 2.8k, you can stay at mine, ill feed you and teach you..
5 weeks later youll be absolutely knackered and in the same boat as me...
...f'cked :RpS_laugh:

go do an electricians course mate..
