i need to get a job done sharpish which involves taking a rad off I normally get this plumber I know to do it but he's away for 3weeks so was going to do it as a one off its only one small one
the question is how do I fill it back up again it's on a gravity fed system I've done loads on a combi system do you put it back on then just vent it? thanks

Put it back on , open both valves up and bleed

Might be worth you getting either some joint compound or ptfe tape and wrapping the olives before we fitting just to avoid any potential leaks. Out of interest how much does your plumber usually charge you?

normally about 80 squid mate 2 journeys

No. Put it back on and open 1 valve then bleed it, if you open both valves your introducing air into the system and could air lock. Opening 1 valve will let it fill before you open the other
an is that it seems easy enough that cheers pal clear explanation

Easy job. Worst bit is draining the individual rad, couple of things that can catch you out.
1 if the valves don’t fully shut. Best way to tell is turn them both off then open the bleed valve you’ll get some water come out and it should stop after around 10 seconds depending on size of rad and if the system is pressure or gravity. If it’s still running from the vent after a min or so then the valves don’t work and you’ve got to drain system.
2 if there’s a thermostatic rad valve fitted (the big heads you turn that are numbered 1 to 5) you can turn them right down to 0 which isolates the rad but at this time of year they do open if the temp in the room drops to below 5 degrees. So if you’ve taken said radiator off and left the valve turned to 0 it will open when the temp drops and piss out all over the floor so always cap them off with a 15mm female cap end with a rubber washer in it

I'm going to cap both ends mate I know about the trv mate can let water through

Last time i took a radoff for a customer the pipes split and i fill 2 ceilings up :-)

Got to redo those though and they paid me to do it

The last rad I took off customer was like yeah take it off i sort it to go back on all like my best mate when it went wrong and pissed out for ages let’s just say we wasn’t mates after that so now I swerve doing it if I can

Trays down slacken nuts, hook off brackets, lay down rad, skim behind, hook back on tighten nuts, boiler on, bleed air check pressure over 1 bar, run !

Top tip if you do or are inclined to take rads off your self is always have some bits of 15mm pipe made up with a stop end on one end and an olive and female connector on the other. Fit them to the rad valves after removal of rad and you avoid any thermostatic valve issues and faulty valve issues et voila

That’s caught me out before. Fortunately on my own house. Never happened since. I’ll remember that though (y)

Iv been out to jobs where people have taken them off their selves and it’s flooded the room out, that’s what happens when you save £80 doing it yourself lol
