was chatting to a fellow spread down our way the other day and he was using thistle bond -it on a house prior to covering with mono.he said he told the rep,(marmorite) is it ok to use bond-it,and he said yes.is this ok?i told him to double check this as i`m pretty sure it`s not the best idea.

Marmorit do their own bonding agent for exterior use, it comes bagged and is called vorspritzer I know cause i got half a pallet of it next to me !

its a bonding agent with 5mm grit for concrete, smooth brick etc. its much cheaper then sm700 and a bag goes miles if you terolene it

no is it ****, it is their flagship bonding/adhesive coat.

vorspritzer is more their rendaid. the spec for presto on smooth brick would be a troweled on 5mm coating of vorspritzer then 10mm of presto

Cool so is it still alright to use sm700 over engineering brick ? Bit thick this one sorry mate that's a big aggregate in that vorsprizer is it a coont to trowel on?

I guess so but which system are you fitting ???.

Have you layed conni spunk??? its much the same just much bigger grit but you can get loads done in a day

Only up210 mate but there's some blocks with no key we've got to go over I was going to nick a bag of sm700, havent used conn yet mate only noblow imagine there similar

I personally would never use thistle bond-it externally but.....

the knauf equivalent betokontakt can be used externally and is more or less the same thing as is microgobetis from parex. I know a feller (construction chemicals rep) who tells me all the brands are made in one place over in germany because they developed the technology and own the rights etc and is only coloured and changed slightly to suit different suppliers branding.

not sure if this is true, I recon most of em prob are from the same chemical plant but I wouldv thought at least oine manufacturer has set up their own production. thats why I never use bond-it outside having said that reps have told me using betokontakt is fine if i had some left over and didnt ant to buy their gear

I put a conservatory wall on with thistlebond-it (green) about 5 years ago and it's still fine. Also rollered some onto a small area of shiny engineering bricks 3 years ago - nothing on top, just wanted to see what would happen - and that's still there. If I think on, I'll see if it'll peel off & let y'all know :RpS_thumbup:

betokontakt is really good stuff I have seen it been used outside over painted render and then re coated with render.

i was always aware of SM grey and SM white, only seen white TBH its been around ages, bet they just gettin rid of one because its pointles having two and then just upgrade the name on the remaining one.

spunk yeah its coloured mate same tint as the finish

thats my point lucius I recon that is also betokontakt

Cheers John were doing noblow and get the odd bit of backing coat come through in specks like where maybe a bit of air or just us being s**t lol

Hi Folks,
Just built a basement flat.Plasterer used thistlebond on the lightwell walls which were smooth concrete. It rained and some areas got wet once thistlebond cured pre plastering. He's gone wont answer his phone and areas are blown already-presume where it rained-lots of hairline cracks too but not blown yet.
Anyone interested in pricing to hack off the blown stuff and re-do correctly.
Regards

I have been researching the limitations on these products since this debate. like I already said the reps say different things and most betokontakt/plaster bonding agent appears to be the same stuff in different tubs although the products that are being sold essentially as plastering bonding agents (betokontakt/thistle bond-it) are popssibly not suitable for external.

Many betokontakt products are being used as an external bonding agent but it is not 100% that they are and I found a german data sheet that translated a message IMPORTANT when using externally add 20% OPC (portland cement) mix through before application. and none of the others even mentioned external use at all, so basically they wont gaurantee it.

So to be safe if using externally just buy the specified, warranted external bonding agent from the render company imo.
I certainlly wouldnt use the bond-it as it seems to contain something different to the betonkontakt and as the last post suggests it has failed

The stuff i used in Spain said it had to be covered within 24 hours god knows what that was about, the more i think about it it is yellow.
