Aslong as you have keyed the render it will be fine to tile

No

No sand and cement floated flat is probably better then skimming. Gypsum plaster does not like water hence using cement backer board on some jobs. Skim is usually tiled anyway but I'd say if your floating is up to scratch leave it plus a lot of skimmers make flat walls a bit bumpy

Or thinking outside the box, you could try Solvite All Purpose Adhesive...it's the only one you need.

I've done a lot of this mate. Get the s/c dead flat and plumb, float it nice, then gently devil it and after a while pass a trowel over to knock back any s/c crumbs. A nice tight finish with a light key is what your after. Obviously this is only my opinion.

Class description...you could teach?

Explain then Mr makeshitup :)
I can't :) ,but I know that the tilers would prefer a rubbed up finish , must admit I do devil float it myself because it's less agg , but if you asked a proper tiler he would say a rubbed up finish, that's the right way .

A proper tiler would know what a mechanical key was :)

why does tiling adhesive need a mechanical key? Have you ever tried getting that sh it off ?:)
Everything works best with a mechanical key it's a lot stronger than a man made key I'm sure you know that. The tiles you and I have tried to take off sand and cement were put on a different way to how tiles are now, ie soaked and put wet on wet.

Aqua boards don't have a key on them either, nor does skim or floor screeds. Not really necessary just a good primer

I think @Natwasere has answered the question
Thank you and good night
