It's better to have a float finish rather than being keyed for tiling , just thought I'd throw that in thereAslong as you have keyed the render it will be fine to tile

Or thinking outside the box, you could try Solvite All Purpose Adhesive...it's the only one you need.ok lads I'm working on this bathroom I'm so keen to get my wall spot on wher it been tiled I now some tilers they can be T***s .I have floated the walls whith sand cement over the years I have skimmed them up. I've done a lot of this mate. Get the s/c dead flat and plumb, float it nice, then gently devil it and after a while pass a trowel over to knock back any s/c crumbs. A nice tight finish with a light key is what your after. Obviously this is only my opinion.ok lads I'm working on this bathroom I'm so keen to get my wall spot on wher it been tiled I now some tilers they can be T***s .I have floated the walls whith sand cement over the years I have skimmed them up. I can't ,but I know that the tilers would prefer a rubbed up finish , must admit I do devil float it myself because it's less agg , but if you asked a proper tiler he would say a rubbed up finish, that's the right way .Explain then Mr makeshitup

why does tiling adhesive need a mechanical key? Have you ever tried getting that sh it off ?A proper tiler would know what a mechanical key was
Everything works best with a mechanical key it's a lot stronger than a man made key I'm sure you know that. The tiles you and I have tried to take off sand and cement were put on a different way to how tiles are now, ie soaked and put wet on wet.W

But a key is betterAqua boards don't have a key on them either, nor does skim or floor screeds. Not really necessary just a good primer

I think @Natwasere has answered the question
Thank you and good night
