S a plastering

is it ok to pva before doing some tiling on new plaster its only about 1.5m the rest is cement board dont want to buy any acyrilic primer for such a small amount cheers

If you are going to apply the PVA where its not going to get wet under normal conditions then it should be ok.

SBR is a better choice though.

pva forms a film on the wall, you end up putting your adhesive on the pva not the wall. use a purpose made sealer.

wouldnt a weak pva mix be ok ? i can see a heavy mix being a problem. I know a tiler who pva's everything and has never had an issue

Apparently PVA wont prevent Entringen when using cement based addys.Their has been much written on the subject giving the reasons why not to use PVA as aprimer for tiling and most of it is in the archives in this forum, the point is adhesive manufacturers make their own primers for their addys, acrylic or SBR based depending on situation so that is what you should use, anything else and it goes wrong you wont have a leg to stand on .

Spot on Pug ,the bond needed from most adhesives (not epoxy ) needs crystallisation which you only get from purpose made primers , pva just causes a barrier.

If you tile over gypsum plaster with a cement based addy without priming ettringen can occour.
