Tooling for cornice/moulding work

I'm doing an extension and want to have a go at running my own work. Used to watch my old man do it but I've never had a go myself, apart from getting covered in plaster an leaving. I'll need the mould, laths, scrim, plaster brush, release agent etc. I'll probably end up with a warped and twisted mess, full if bubbles and cracks but you never know, I might get the bug!

Looong list of tools - fibrous not piece of cake as it needs a lot of dedication like religion and will never become a master unless it is in your blood like Mike.

A little bit of sick has just come up into my mouth.

Anyone recommend a 'starter' tool kit? I've already got a generic plasterers rig but to be honest have not done anything proper before so will be buying the things I remember we're used by he old boys 20 yrs ago when I helped out for £5 pocket money on a Saturday.

Funny that because I watched a group of complete novices take an intensive three week course and by the end of it most were producing some beautiful work. Obviously they didn't have the experience needed but it shows that fibrous isn't the 'dark art' some will have you believe. And that's with know disrespect at all to Mike who is clearly at the top of his trade just as others on here are in theirs.

Depends what you wanted to make, tell us what you want then we can point you to right tools... Really you use it all the time and not cheap as shellac gone up to roof.

Have had a look at the tomps site, seems they've got most of what I'll need in terms of materials. Stupid question time......can you buy reverse moulds or will i have to run my own? If I have to run my own, can I buy profiles or again, will I need to cut my own?

No, you need to make own reverse mould , you buy zinc , cut them down and file off - you need buy jewellers and tin snips and miniature files. Like Mike says - list is endless! Plus need sand and casting to make core as casting swell like hell and cause drag marks if no core. You need to stalk @puddove lol

Why zinc? Could I not use aluminium.
