Hi guys,I see alot of good monocouche garden planters on here and net..without top stone on ..I saw a front garden wall today that looked mint 3 years ago but now is stained with dirt/algee and looked 30 years old my question is have u guys that do them or walls without top stone seen your work years later and does it still looks nice and fresh?

Needs a coping really, but they do look nice without, well for a few weeks anyway
Agreed they look good without wish I had took picture of the one I was on about the house looked fresh still was done at same time but the wall was awful..thought after 3 years it was pointless using mono if it couldn't be cleaned and would need painting to look fresh ..might as well sand and cement ...unless there is anyone who can say different?

What we find it is the way people want them done these days ,ok if it does look stained in a few years they are told it will need painting

I am boring myself here ! Lol
top stone or not?

This is a good topic.
A lot of people forget gardens walls usually get built with no dpc (another subject) and have earth retaining walls and so if there not protected against this it will also stain the coloured render from the back of the wall.
I'm gonna doing some in my house when I do my garden but I'll tank the walls as it won't cost me labour wise but doing this on clients jobs adds lots of money which most people won't want to pay or will be told it isn't needed.
No copings is asking for trouble when water will sit on the top and soak through eventually.
Render is water resistant not water proof after all.

I did some with sand and cement for my bro in law 8 years ago membrane on inside of planters no beads (free hand edges) ,no dpm...he built em 1 metre ish high and no stone tops ,painted sandex paint and rendered to the ground on steps as well they were ok for 4 years some bit lower down n tops need redoing which was fine he wasn't bothered and I wasn't it was all a trial really to c what happened and he didn't pay me for it (family rates).I done others with tops s n c santex, with beads of ground n membrane etc they been fine ...I just starting on monocouche now but my main problem with these planters in gardens etc is getting into a battle off with customer if they start complaining bout colour etc after a few years..s n c not to bad to say to them yer no problem I come patch it up ...but mono cost more(materials wise) and patching harder...having said that outside is outside it all gets weathered so I see as part of what it is.For me I not got a machine as of yet and looking at getting one in new year there plenty of render/mono to go at round here.

What's the best way too tank retaining walls just for future ref

Depends how far and how much you want to spent time and money wise but arti has just posted two easy and cheapish options which will work well if done properly

We can only advice the customer on the best way to carry out these jobs.
If they don't want a coping then it's there choice surely
If I drive past a job and its stained and failing because they didn't take your advice then I don't lose no sleep.
