when fining down sand and cement render is it preferable to lightly key the surface with a devil float ready to tyrolean a few days later or just leave it plain

Have to agree. I was taught to devil float but on the last job I did I looked at it after a couple of passes and thought to myself if id rubbed it smooth itd be finished now but some of the floating was grinning through

Get some lime in your top coat for suction, also paint the tyrolean on before you spray it. It will cover so much quicker.

what mixes do u boys use this time of year for the floating coat eg -4-1-1, 5-1-1, 6-1-1 I use a 4-1-1/2 what be the better for it to go off a bit quicker

More cement faster the set but the stronger the mix more chance of crazing which will show when it is drying out after a good downpour. Try 3 coats the second not having waterproofer in so you will have some grab.

You could do in one day with Weber OCR and bit of suction in the substrate or use frost proofer to accelerate the set.
