Went to do a quote today, basically she needed pine cosmeticly applied floor boards removing (whole floor )5mx5m upper floor bedroom so the carpet could be laid to same level as other rooms.
3 extra plug sockets installing,a modern twin 5 foot radiator to replace old fashioned rusty 7 foot jobbie, all wall paper removing and room re skimming.
My sparky charges me £50 a socket signed off so £150 for electrics, then theres the rad and thermo valves length of 15mm pipe and fittings say £125,then theres 1 day to remove wallpaper and prep , 1 day to skim,1 day to rip floor up and tip (its upper floor).
Anyhow i quoted her £900 all in.
She laughed and told me shes had quotes for £500 £950 and me £900 and said shes going with the guy that can do it for £500.
I explained to her materials alone will cost him £200 if he can do the electrics, plumbing, plastering and all that for £200 doesnt that worry you as would take me 4-5 days also is he a qualified or compotant electrician????
her reply No hes the cheapest, why would he quote for the job if he cant do it.
Tried to give her my card incase of any hickups or future reference, she said no thank you, youre far to expensive.
Now i know i cant do electrics or gas and apart from that anything else goes regarding building work ive been doing this a long time but i know that was a fair price probably cheap.
Please tell me guys how the (french word) can you work for 4-5 days for £300 ??????

same old story mate, it happens. and then they end up paying again for it to be done properly. if you drive past now and then, pop in in a few weeks and give her your card. she'll rip your arm off this time!

our day will come mate the reccession will go and we will redion work like that and chargin double also those builders who are takin the piss a builder said to me before christmas u no what i like about this climate i said what "use alot are are working cheap " he rang today and said can we cove a 4 four bedroom house wiv matrials for 350 >:( told him we wanted 500 he put fone down and said we were to daer :o what the f**k

Mate thats what ur up against.I know people have to put food on the table and i understand that prices have to be a bit lower in this climate to attract fresh customers, but you cant work for peanuts can ya??
this guys obviously doesnt know what the fcuk hes doing becuse a plumber would charge £200-£250 to change rad, sparky £150 to £200,plasterer £250-£300 5mx5m room plus the labour to remove paper flooring etc and tipping costs.
All i can say is hope the fcking rads leaks and damages the ceiling below and the plaster cracks like fook and she gets a shock and losses a finger from the electrics.

nice one grand. lmao.
Sign of the times pal im afraid people will work for less than 100/day at the mo no prob so its no suprise at all to me. my pal is a master crafstsman panel beater, his take home pay is 340/week and he is 1 talented mofo he always says to me why you complaining I understand he is cards in but his point is valid. this is toilet Britain right now the average wage is 23k yr

I was undercut by nearly 50% on a job a bit back by some poles.

A year later I ended up working next door but one, and he said the same lads who did the job also watched them do her block paving.

This is the gods honest truth - he said he watched them just put the blocks on her grass and smack them down with lump hammers, and did the same with the soil borders.

I can only wonder what her walls look like...............................dumb stinky witch :)

you can understand people wanting a fair price. but when you get people like that they deserve what they get. if its 50% off then theres obviously something going on.

all depends on the two prices suppose. I mentioned before that ten plasterers could price a job for skimming a box room between £80 (too low) and £350 (too high) 50% off the later being £175 (not bad) no two plasterers use the same pricing method. this is the reason half the public dont trust tradesmen along with harry enfield and builders from hell tv shows

I went and priced a 20 m2 living room on tuesday with an artexed ceiling and a bay window. I said to the fella i would do it for £350 with materials. He looked at me like i had just pulled down my pants and done a s**t on his floor. I said i take it thats more than you were expecting. He said he was looking to pay £150-£200!!!

NO CHANCE

one of the old dears my mum helps out had some work done on her kitchen. just wee walls, coupla patches, coving in one room. I'd have went in at my 160 day rate plus mats on top.

The f**k*r that done the job, I wasn't after it so no loss to me, said..............................65 mats included :o :o :o :o :o

He musta made a good 1.50 for that days work.

I just priced a job - bedroom 4m sq. Remove old ceiling, joists are all out so allow to re noggin, reboard & skim (barrel ceiling), prep walls with wba (some t**t has painted them with gloss paint), reskim all the walls, come back after the chippy has made some fitted wardrobes and skim a section of false wall he has made then fit cornice - i quoted £500, (495), she says piss off can get it done for £250 ??? I say must be a tool, the mats off that he's making sod all. No wonder i'm cleaning windows now ;D

I bought a round Steve, so straight into it really. Its worth £1800 an month so pretty good, already had a few new ones come on so fingers crossed. Had to pay 3 times the monthly income to get it though.

I have been at the moment as im a bit slow coz new to it but wanna try cut that to 3 days so can still do the odd plastering job when i want to

i priced a ceiling a little while back

bout 30m over artex in a mint living room with nice oak floors etc.

in my opinion it would take most of the day with sheeting clearing and plastering

i quoted £180.

he said he was told he could get it done for between £80 and £100

assuming u need 3-4 bags of multi to cover the artex (£20), pva (£10), that leaves u with between £50 and £70.

no thanks!

Its a joke. They all think current climate an all they can take the piss. And the problem is there is usually some idiot signing on who will do it

Sometimes you have to remind people that you are running a business and the cost of living doesn't change .

Some bloke undercut us by £400 on a bathroom refurb last January, i had a call to look ath floor as a few of the tiles were loose. He had nailed 9.5mm plasterboard to the floor and tiled on the board and tiling was shocking, reckon you would have cut your foot open on the tile edges they were so uneven

if you lads dab out a bathroom then tile onto board do you scrim joints?for sum reason i do as say he grout follows the line it may help it from cracking? am i just a lil but mad?

A few years ago we were on a job and our young lab was telling us he and his mate spit roasted a bird so we told one of the other spreads on site that he spit roasted this bird and he turned round and said never he took her out for a meal lol :)
