on a nice finish staircase like that id be inclined to make a cupboard under stairs and not plaster it..
if it was going to.get painted then maybe..

Mesh and bond it. Use plenty of screws. Bonding is stronger than you think. Make sure you cut your fingers on the mesh too.

We had to board something like that once. We hardboarded it, then cut the plasterboard to ribbons and glued it on. Fcuk knows how the plasterer coped with the curves when he skimmed it but it came out all right.

I’d rather mesh it don’t forget the backing paper behind it or it will forever be falling off. Takes time

Done one recently was an absolute pig!
Chippies asked me what’s best under the stairs I said ply and then eml on top.

Was then bonded out and then skimmed.
The curve and angle was sooo tight and in multiple directions was a real pain. Luckily I had my trusty Nela plasiflex! Wouldn’t fancy doing it all with one steel trowel. Really hard to follow contours especially on tight curves.
Charge accordingly!!!

I stuffed the space behind the mesh with sound insulation :D which has been good so you cant hear me going up and down them

I very much doubt that we'd hear you anyway.
Unless I'm the only one that doesn't get invited round for cocktails?

It’s called a kite-winder. As said chopper said building paper although I’ve done loads without, anything will do, vapour felt etc. Anything to stop the plaster falling off the inside of the eml. I board where I can then mesh, prickle coat of bonding, (allow to set) don’t worry if you have holes still. 2nd coat, scratch & allow to set. 3rd coat if necessary, brush over once stiff before set, once set run over with plane to give a good curved surface to skim onto. It’s much easier nowadays with supaflex but just keep going over it & sponging it and they come up mint if your anygood. You can always sand it too if your worried.
