hi all,

How would you go about float & setting an uneven stone wall, i've got to do my sister in laws steps down to the cellar then blend it into the plaster at the bottom at some point.

Hi ezz, assuming you can float and set a perfectly straight brick wall then the technique is exactly the same.. the difference is in the prep.. sort any likely damp problems you'll encounter by going below ground level.. tanking prolly best if youve got to blend in..
some pointers in the faq..(new to plastering section)

cheers Chris,
Its the uneven part of it thats got me thinking as in some places it needs hardly nothing so setting
the batons will be a right ballache to get level to blend it in.

I've only done float and set once at college six months ago and that was a small was with a window in the
middle so we used a darby on the angle beading to keep the wall level

I don't want to sound mean Ezz but if you have only ever float & set once before and that was a nice straight forward little wall then you are well out of your depth with a wall like this(especially if you think you need battens to work of). If you make a pigs ear of it that's all you will be remembered for, if you hold you're hand up and say I'm not up to this YET then you should gain some respect and get more offers from your family and friends in the future. All the best and keep learning and when you stop learning it's time to retire!

if its a old stone wall, there is a poss that the existing plaster is not straight and neat. this we dont know, if its rough then just match it, good chance existing isnt ruled off which makes things a bit easier for him

I'm only learning as its something i really enjoy and more importantly something i want to do,
i have done loads of skimming (still trying to up my speed) so far everyone has been really happy
with my finish and i'm getting more people asking me to do theirs.
I'm not charging just doing it for free for family on a weekend to get more experience,as i said this
aspect of plastering i want to learn just wasn't sure how to go about it.
Now you mention it i seem to remember how we did the bottom part of the wall at college and there
wasn't any batens :-[

good point, but to try a stone wall is not the best place to start, that should be attempted with more experience. without seeing it we dont know how good or bad it is, but i reckon its gonna be thick. ezz give us some pics :)

hold a straight edge along your wall mak up where needs filled out let it go off then scratch and top coat as you have been taught if you need battens then use them if there are still a few hollows behind them when plumb them up just use packers to stop them bouncing when you are ruling off them.

your not charging and its a family members and as long as they are happy to let u practise on their walls then fill your boots mate
