I need to plaster my mums house , the ceiling in the attic is coming down , its a lattice ceiling (not plasterboard) and is at 45 degrees to a higher ceiling and is curved at this point. Any ideas how to go about this one.

Yes contact a skilled plasterer, and this is not meant as a joke but a way of saving you a load of grief.

Ive been on a course and can plaster a boarded ceiling no problems (done quite a few) but never came accross this latted stuff before was hoping for some usefull info ! Dont worry I wont nick your jobs !!!

Mags my first reply wasn't meant as a put down, this ceiling really is a different animal to skimming on board, a bit like the difference between cooking beans on toast or stuffed chicken breast encroute.

Thanks for that , In what way is it different I take it id need to render it or even remove the lats and put board up?

Are there any local plasterers to me Gosforth / newcastle ! Whod be willing to do the job an have someone watching over the shoulder and asking questions ?

i'd lay a big ground sheet out on the floor...
get a shovel / floor scraper... get it behind the plaster but over the laths and running in the direction of the laths remove the plaster... leave the laths up though because theyll hold up all the soot and crap that years of victorian living left up there... not to mention any insulation...
then cross battening is a good idea but you can just screw though into the existing joists, depends on how sound they are...
one thing overboarding, but another when its an l+p ceiling and its dead loose... lots of weight in the old plaster but not so much in the laths..

Thanks for your replies I agree with the weight thing Chrisw the plaster is falling off in many areas and its about an inch thick in places so pretty heavy. I don,t fancy overbaording this.

I also know my limits and may get a time served plasterer in to do this one and learn a bit in the process, anyone fancy a nice job in newcastle ;)

theres only one or two time served lads knocking about im one of them but im in manchester so you better hope the other one is close by.........;)
