What do you lads do if the recommend the correct way on a job for eg on a ceiling.

You know it needs to be overboarded and skimmed. Customer dont like the price of that and says just skim over it.

Do you tend to

a)Walk away with your rep in tact
b) Do the job and tell them its their fault if it all falls off with a few quid in yer pockets

??

tell the customer theres a cheap way and an theres a proper way.

i'v went to see an attic flat and the women asked me the same, she even suggested to me that i seal the old wooden beads with neat pva to stop them expanding, when i would rather take them out and reset the angle at the least.

i quoted about £2800 to rip out everything, board/rough and skim the 3rd floor flat (attic) she asked me to price it up as a patch and skim.
wall where curved into ceiling, curved wall to wall, all old slate lath with S&C that had blown everywhere, as it was the attic you can imagine the there was nothing behind the lath at the bootom of the walls.

i basically walked away after 5 mins of nagging, heard she had it done for . . . . .£500.

not sure if thats materials inc or not but i was told £500.

windy why cant it just be skimmed if you dont mind mate?

i would state very clearly that, it would look a t**t without doing it the correct way.

i usually give the option of the cheap way or the proper way, and tell them it would look better and last longer if they paid that extra £100 - £150 to have it taken back and start again.

only on smaller jobs though, bigger jobs like above, i wouldn't entertain, your setting yourself up for a massive fall if its anything bigger then a ceiling or a couple of walls

However i suppose it could be sagging or moving if you prod it with a brush. Loads of old wallpaper on the ceiling or distemper?

off topic, i'v not been on here for a while and have been reading essexboy's post earlier today and spark1234.

**** me, i was in on the floor. keep it up.

excellent entertainment value

if it was that bad i would put my hand through the ceiling while i was there quoting and show them why it needs doing correctly

if they want they cheap option give it them, but state on your invoice that you told them you would prefer to do it the other way etc

Usually go for the money but let them know that if it goes tits up it's not my problem.

Bring spark1234 with you. He can put it in bags using his bucket trick when it falls down

Most customers will go for the best option. The only time I've ever had to do work which I didn't really agree with the method/materials was for builders.

now now essexboy, and when i posted this you were telling me how good of an idea it was...
You should take these little tips on board will help with the labouring as mac_plastere called you lol

If the customer wants it doing the wrong way and you refuse then someone else will do it. I know who's pocket I would want the money in

just do the job...
tell them if you do it your way, at your price, if anything goes wrong youll fix it. known as a guarantee.
also tell them if you do it their way and it goes wrong, the guarantee ran out the moment your van was off the drive...
people like to take risks to save money, let em, sometimes they get away with it... you cant guarantee it WILL fail, or if you could, thats the time to laugh and walk away...

My problem of late has been recommending fully replacing blown walls then being informed that 3 other plasterers have told them you can get away with skimming some of the walls.
I then look like I'm ripping them off cos I'm twice the price and can't drop cos I'll look more of a fool.
I'm f**k*d off with this game and see no reason to have any pride in my work cos no other f**k*r I'm up against seems to have any,and clients don't care till they get problems.
Previously from the off i'd recommend the right way or if asked to bodge would do as Chris said.

i skimmed a l+p ceiling cheap for a landlord a couple of months ago...
usual convo... it really wants dropping and reboarding, failing that over boarding, failing that ill skim it and scrim the cracks up but if it goes tits up dont blame me...
'ah just skim it mate'..

still there, painted, no cracks, not even a faint hairline.... surprising but you just cant tell sometimes....
it went on thick to level it out too.... 2 bags on a 12m ceiling...

Agree Chris - (nice to see your back on here too mate:RpS_thumbup: )- I usually tell the punter that I can do it the right way or the cheap way, and if it's a landlord they go cheap, if it's for someone's own house they usually find the funds to do it right...........people eh?
