wba

wba is polymer based bonding agent that includes a silicon key. It's waterproof, unlike pva. pva will come back to life if it comes in contact with water/moisture. pva obviously doesn't have a mechanical key in it either although you can always add some sand to pva.

Generally people use wba for artex'd surfaces; where you have different substrates with different suctions it'll ensure you get the same suction; on painted surfaces like gloss that don't have any suction at all. It can also used on friable surfaces where pva might not really do the job adequately. I've also brushed it on wooden lintels successfully.

I wouldn't be tempted to use wba or a similar bonding agent on everything you used to pva - it takes time to cure and it's expensive compared to pva. Although wba will give you a lot longer in terms of reducing suction.

hope that helps

yep thats alwmost a perfect answer twitch :-)

But just to add board finish is best to use over WBA and also you can piss the wba down a bit with water I know some spreads water it down with PVA... depends how tight you are.

This stuff has save my arse a few times and is worth every penny... but you have to wait for it to go off completly... I use to go into a customers house the night before get dust sheeted up scrape the artex back and WBA it teh night before then it has loads of time to go off and also you know the night before whether the customer has emptied rooms etc.

depends on the suction of the substrate

I really doubt wba will go off in 2 hours for artex - more like 4/6 hrs or more depending on what's been painted on it and how thick it is

depends on the artex when I scrape an artex cieling back it really does get scraped back! so exposes more and teh suction is mental.

I still like leaving it over night :-)

I now WBA all artex and any silk/gloss surfaces. As Danny says, leave overnight for best results and dont be afraid to water it down slightly. A lot of the spreads i know won't use it because it's too expensive but i say it's woth it for the peace of mind. Nothing worse than a customer talking the back off you after the plaster has failed on the artex. And it does happen with PVA. (oh,yes it does)

pva is sh1te

but cheap(er)

most of the bonding agents are made by the same company from germany, they colour and tweek it for different people including thistles, buy the cheapest you can find. its been around for years over there on the externals

oh yeah forgot to mention, it proper mongs you out if you're in an enclosed space.

used the knauf stuff recently on two hallways landing and stairs, and **** me I had to go home - me head was spinning!

best get someone else to do it, like the missus if you aint got a labourer :RpS_wink:
