What is floating?

i think its like the backing coat you put on befor you skim it or somthing like that ie hardwall,tough coat,sand and cement ect ect

No disrespect to you Shaun2010 but where did you learn plastering?

Before I could call myself a plasterer I had to learn:

Skimming, float & set, floor screeding , coving both fixing and running moulds, trowel float trowel setting , rendering and plasterboard fixing, as well as using rules instead of angle bead.
Later on I learn dot & dab, taping & jointing M/f ceiling and partitioning.

And don;t forget being able to read and price from drawings.

What do they teach plasterers today I wonder?
