Evening all, what does the term 'Sto' refer to? Is it a particular product or process. Just curious. cheers

cheers gibbo. I have done a lot of Krend and a little monocouche, was asked to take on a big job but the client sounded vague as to what the specs are. detail I was given was that it is insulation board drill and fixed over face brick, meshed then "Sto-ed" I have seen marmorite based coat used then thin coat finished. If he gives me a more detailed spec I will ask around here for more advice, lads here seem to know what they are talking about. Will probably walk away as it is a bit out of my comfort zone

just found sto website, will have a good look at their system. does anyone here use or has used sto?

hope that helps ,but as you said you may be better to walk away from it at this time ,to give yourself more time and training in the product ,before you undertake such a large job, best of luck

couldnt agree more, stick to what you know I say, otherwise get trained. too long in the tooth to try gambling with products unfamiliar. client wanted us to run things and get spreads in but like I said , out of my comfort zone.

If I get more feedback from client I will post more info on here. We have rakes of skimming on in the new year so will put off learning new systems for a while. thanks for the feedback :-)

what system would you prefer over insulation board and are there any that can be sprayed?
Knauf marmorit sps enviro wall there are loads and depends on what machine you have most will do the backing coats but not topcoat

Sto are listed and approved under the National Schedule of Rates, and as such are generally listed by architects in their EWI specifications. As such they are over priced and overrated and also operate 'cartel like' practices in respect of the approved applicators they use to complete their work

im Sto approved [after a lot of hasstle] im also Parex, Weber etc, The only reason why ive gone down the Sto route is because a firm of architects whom I do a chunk of work for have taken on a large house build near us that we are to render, and the client for what ever reason was adement that we were to use that system. Your right in the respect that its a closed shop and the criteria to meet is way over the top, but I look at the point of view its another avenue to go down. As there are only 3 firms that cover the whole of west and North Yorkshire.
There are equally good systems if not better out there these days at a lot more favourable cost.

correct.

Thanks for all the feedback on this post. I have had more feedback from client and have decided to walk away from this one. It is an extremely big job but I have had the carrot dangled before me too many times to be tempted by it. I have seen many competent spreads f*ck up work, not from lack of skill, but lack of product knowledge. I may try my hand in the thin coat market next summer ( I think our next one is 2016) for now I'm sticking to what I know
