What is the bench mark am fook if I know. What we have is a system how to plaster buildings. How we do this is another question, some spreads are neater some dirty feckers when working . What matters is the finish is to a acceptable standard and you only learn that from another spread. So what is the right length of time to learn the plastering trade and what should this include a domestic skimmer or a dot and dab skimmer should we also inclued mono , lime rendering, floor laying , pebbledashing, and so the list goes on. I know lads who learnt just on domestic and thats all they do some only do newbuild and could not render a front if they had to never been shown in other words. no idea of suction mixing etc there words not mine. So we come back to the question what should a plaster need to no and how long should his training be. We dont get faster in time only more skilled .

well i think to call yourself a plasterer you should be at least able to skim and render in all the materials avalible screed and run mouldings internal and external

plastering is exactly that, all aspects should be included to call yourself a plasterer. its like being a just a first fix chippy or second fix plumber. fair enough if you choose not to do floating/rendering thats up to you. but you should be able to do it to class yourself as a real plasterer. mess isnt too much of a concern unless youre talking more stuff on the floor than is on the wall, as long as its left clean. plastering is the dirtiest trade but the more you drop on the floor, the less youre putting on the wall which means you have to pay out for more mats in the long run.

Am with you grand but plastering become fragmented the title plasterer is just a general term now days .No am not knocking anyone it's just the way it is.

well im 54 and still learning every day... but i can float and skim, render, lime render, parget, polished plaster, run cornice insitu, pebbledash, thincoat systems EWI, EIFS marbelite, and am still quite fast at chucking it on Ask Flynny...

i can do everything Render syssy can do plus lay liquid floor screed and i'm 30 next year.. if anyone wants a villa in miami as well i got 2 left

back 2 the question a to be called a plasterer should be able 2 doe a bit ov every thing 2 good standerd & have good knowlegde obout his materials & backgronds & suction rates it all takes time to learn & you never stop learning IMO :RpS_thumbup:

Well in my opinion being able to do the lot and that includes fibrous is the benchmark anything less is below the mark.

barryed is a bit scary using words like you-fa-mism, not many plasterers use words like that mate, how the **** did you end up in the building trade if you have such a vocabulary lol

I was thinkin the same how does somone know so much about moustaches hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Fair enough sandy but its not about having another string to your bow its Part of the big picture, picking and choosing parts of the craft does not make the benchmark in my opinion. Lots of people make a good living just being able to skim but do they make the grade or benchmark as a PLASTERER in my opinion, no. The game is changing all the time and new systems are coming in so we all have to keep learning but the basics are there its really just the materials that are changing.

I like big words!!! I ended up doing this after I packed in university and went down this route. Does not seem like one of my best ideas on reflection :RpS_crying:

A plasterer in my opinion can do al aspects of plastering i.e screeding render skim f/s d/d m/f t/j and to install coving and mouldings venetian and lime render too ,If you can do all that and do only that to make a living then you can call yourself a plasterer.
I would not class myself as a plasterer i can do most of that above to a good standard and have made a good living with the knowledge i have.Im multi trade and run a multi trade business im very good at everything i can do but some of these guys are f u c k i n g awsome and are talented beytond ur wildest dreams and that is the difference.
Plasterers fall into 3 catergories excellent, usefull, and useless spreads out there. What are you ? Im honest and im between usefull and awsome any less than that hang your trowel up !!
