Got a stairwell ceiling l & p to overboard on monday...its not in 2 bad nick but couple of major cracks running through...customer wants overboard.

Found the joists yesterday on the better side of the ceiling (without the big cracks) the last joist is over the wall...so nearest fixing I can get for board is 380mm from wall...can't get into it at an angle with longer screws either.

I'll be using 9.5mm plasterboard on this one...what do you reckon gripfill end of board few screws into lathes? be ok?

Usually i'd put noggins in from loft...but its boarded out with crappy chipboard glued together...already had to remove some and it crumbled..chances are i'd have to reboard up there as well dont want to create to much extra work if i can get away with it.

If it's still got the old laths underneath you'll be able to put a few screws into them. Just screw slowly and you'll find 'em:RpS_thumbup:

Also agree with the above comments. Some times
You have to settle for the best you can do

Any of the above...FreeD

All good answers, dry wall adhesive, gripfill and expanding foam all stick like s***e

Hi Mr approved just had a look at your website, you have a very impressive client list but how do you cope with being the main plastering contractor to some of the biggest building companies in the country to then pricing up over skims and such like?

Hi essexandy,
simple answer is i dont!!!

Ive been in the plastering trade for the last 20 years, our previous client list is is under the history tab which you will be talking about..

I find lately and during the current climate the domestic side provides us with 90% of our work but im not willing to forget the opposite side which provided us with 90% of our work over the last 15 years.

I still currently still receive tenders for sites/jobs/phases but arnt willing to drop to the rates they are trying to get us to beg for!!!!

Im hoping if i didnt include all our previous clients/customers on our website we wouldnt be trying to promote our company to its fullest

Essexandy... hope his answers your question....... If you have any more please dont hesitate to ask and thank you for giving our website a viewing, good or bad opinions are always appreciated.

Yeah nice enough website mate.
I don't blame you at all for not dropping down to the levels needed to win the bigger jobs I won't either, do you find the prices holding up better in the domestic market?
What sort of work did you get the NHBC awards for? Do you find the NHBC certs. help to win new jobs as I find that potential clients love mine?

Andy, i've worked on some of the sites they been on , he is definitely cosha mate, knows what he is doin for deff

Did I infer otherwise? If he thought I was I certainly wasn't, I was just interested. I'm also being nosey at everyones websites as we're going to have a new one built and I'm looking for ideas, which reminds me. Do you have to get permission to use the logos of the different companies and organisations you have on your site Paul?

essexandy...... no offence took mate.

Our website was done by a friend of a friend, it's not my doings although i fed her the info to go on it obviously.

Im just trying to get my plastering brain round the Search Engine Optimization on the site to try and get it pushed further up the Google ladder so to speak as i think everyone would probably agree that the world wide web is gonna provide most of our work over the forthcoming years....Barring word of mouth of course and reputation.

As regards the domestic market scene in and around Doncaster Andy, im not convinced the prices are holding up as most new customerers seem hellbent on finding the cheapest quote (but not always the most sensible) after sitting in front of the local rag or Thomson Local and dialing as many local Plasterers whilst watching Jeremy Kyle!!!

The thing that most appeals to domestic though is the nature of the work.... i.e. Yes you could earn £30 £40 £50 more on sitework per day but would find yourself grafting 3 X times as much for it!!!
1. After fighting your way through the site foremans office, a lecture on health and saftey.
2. Once that battle was won, next port of call was a tussle with forklift driver who seems hellbent on making your life as difficult as possible.
3. Not to mention feeling like you have to physically drill down to the watertable to get a barrel of water.
4. All of the above providing the house has previously been pre-plaster examined under a fine toothed comb!!! or the old one-liner "he's passing it off this morning"

We all know what level sitework has been pulled down to and approaching 40 yr old and grey hairs multiplying overnight im inclined to massivelly favour residential, maybe if i wag younger and the government and banks had refrained from pulling the bo****ks out of the country and economy i would be thinking much different!!!

Andy as far as the NHBC awards go, we won only 4 personally but it was around 8 and 10 years ago through David Wilson homes, i have worked on lots of sites that have gained awards but never had personal awards passed on to ourselves. In all honesty i never mention the awards to potential customers as i dont like making them feel as though im trying flannel and flog them something if you know what i mean....

Im a plasterer with a wife and 2 kids not a money making salesman and would hope i got most of my work from sounding honest and not a leg-lifter, but then were back down to the cheapest quote scenario and what chance do we all stand when were pricing against "Mr John Smiths who we got recommended down the local boozer only looking for his beer money??? no chance"

Apologies if you think it's turned into a rant, just trying to answer questions truthfully. keep smiling!

There may be a Ritmo available at a very reasonable cost in three weeks Paul:RpS_unsure:

I'm not sure that the Ritmo alone will full fill my needs mate, need the grunt ogf a g4 on some of the bigger jobs, but the ritmo would be ideal for the little domestic jobs, as per this thread and bucket coats etc, think Brownpants has the ideal setup with the g4 and pft swing

Now you say

honestly dont think u can go wrong with the ritmo. cheap genny, cheap to run, r+s last a long time, and more than quick enough for a 2-1. we just did a 40-45 bag spray and we were on a spatted in just over an hour
